Online book on Parkinson's is free and lots of fun
Want to read a book on Parkinson's that is not only enlightening and chock full of interesting information, but is almost too much fun to put down? I found that "The Strange Case of Dr. Parkinson" by the Spanish neurologist Rafael Gonzalez Maldonado, M.D. fits that description. First published in

Nicotine as a neuroprotectant
1. Extensive studies in parkinsonian animals show that nicotine protects against NIGROSTRIATIAL damage, findings that may explain the well-established decline in Parkinson’s disease incidence with tobacco use. In addition, recent work shows that nicotine reduces L-dopa-induced abnormal involuntary movements

Rytary off to a shaky start
My neurologist and I have agreed that I'm going to give up on the idea of trying rytary for two reasons: 1. My health insurance company, apparently like most in the U.S., is refusing to cover this new med. 2. A survey I did of over 50 reports on using rytary that I found on this forum and a similar

Less is more when it comes to my pills
Thanks to new thinking by some medical authorities regarding statins and blood pressure meds for us old folks, I'm now taking only one prescription medication – – carbidopa levodopa. And only three over-the-counter pills – – Vitamin D-3, curcumin and 5-HTP. For details, see http://bit.ly/1HxzXZA.

Anybody else experiencing this blood pressure-levodopa link?
I'm always trying new ways of dealing with my health care. I'm intrigued by my latest experiment. In my two-year battle with my doctors over how to deal with the dangerous spikes I was getting in my blood pressure during my levodopa off periods, I took a lot of blood pressure readings on my home monitor

Ready to start my new prescription for rytary but . . .
My Parkinson's disease neurologist has just prescribed rytary, the new extended release version of levodopa that the FDA approved in January. But for nearly a month now I've been very pleased with the results I've achieved by switching from the regular carbidopa-levodopa that I've used for years to

My blood pressure and levodopa -- six of my doctors were wrong and I was right.
For a couple of years, my major health concern has been the spikes in my blood pressure that occur when I'm in the off period as the old levodopa pill wears off and the new one hasn't kicked in. My take has been that the origins of the problem stems from the levodopa off periods. Six of the doctors I've

L-Dopa or Azilect (rasagiline) positively affecting mental states?
Has anyone tried going off L-DOPA (or carbidopa) or Azilect (rasagiline) and noticed a change in thinking such as being more critical of people or more easily irritated?

Is he on Sinemet?
i was on Sinemet and researched how the carbidopa depletes B6 which isnecessary for many metabolics, thats why people loose weight. I lost 65 # and started taking mega doses of B6, much better, and starting to gain weight, and my tremors are getting better, alot better, considering this is the major

Botox & Other Meds
I have severe Cervical Dystonia along with PD (2010) and I have had three Botox injections with no signicant improvement. My movements are slow, freezing episodes, (including hand while eating), no tremor but numerous other symptoms. I'm on carbi-levodopa 25/250 4 x day and one ER 50/200 at bedtime.

Parkinson's awareness??
This week has seen World Parkinson's Awareness day and, in the UK, Parkinson's Awareness week. I assume the aim is to make the general public - and the medical profession- 'aware' that PD is not simply 'getting shaky in old age' but is a complex and devastating degenerative neurological disease that

PD. Sleep Issues - Any Advise
Hi. I was diagnosed with PD in June 2012 I am currently on 100/25 Co-careldopa, x3 per day, 2.62mg Mirapexin & 10mg Seligiline. My issues are that I am constantly tired. I tend to grab 4-5 hours sleep at night but wake at around 0400. I'm struggling to stay awake at work throughout the day at the computer

I am a firm believer in IBUPROFEN. I have been taking a small dose of about 10 - 20 ml of FENAPAED, which is a child's format - and kinder
Ibuprofen is a well known anti-inflammatory. My neuro is rather dismissive, and just says "it isn't proven!". Well I was diagnosed in 1991, and have been overtaken downhill by all my friends with pd. The progression has plateaued. I take 7 x 125mg MADOPAR and 3 x 0.36mg (each dose being 2 x 0.18mg

Success with CDP Choline?
Has anyone tried CDP Choline as an additional way to boost dopamine? There's an interesting study in which PWPs were able to lower their levodopa dose when taking CDP Choline. I'm thinking of adding this supplement but would like to hear personal experiences first. Please let me know if you've tried

IF YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.. BEFORE PD, I WAS A CHEESE BURGER.
from my blog https://diaryofamadparkie.wordpress.com/ It has been said “You are what you eat” and it may be true. New research in mice suggests. upon aging, a high-fat diet significantly accelerated the onset of neurological symptoms in mice that were genetically predisposed to develop Parkinson’s

CONFUSED
My husband who is 77 was diagnosed with Parkinsonism. After a bout in the hospital to treat AFib, he was put on a new med since the one he has been given was not working. Why start treatment with levodopa?
I was diagnosed in the dopamine agonist era, treatment to start with agonists, supplemented with MAOb inhibitor. The aim was to delay taking levodopa as long as possible which in turn would delay onset of motor fluctuations and dyskinesia. Inevitably, the loss of dopamine was not matched by agonist

‘Don’t delay, start today’: delaying levodopa does not delay motor complications
An interesting article from Dec 2014 edition of Brain, challenging the need to delay starting levodopa treatment. http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/137/10/2628
