5Rhythms Challenge - Week 2 of 3

How is everyone doing? Yesterday I had a full day of going to expos and an art biennial launch in the evening, so my tight calves and tired feet are feeling it this morning. I just may give them a day to recover before heading into this week’s 5Rhythms workouts. But I’m looking forward to doing these mid-length sessions, as they are better to get deeper into each rhythm, becoming a bit more meditative with their movement.

So we’re continuing with getting to know the 5-Rhythms with some medium length practices. But we’ll also hear a bit more of its founder and key practitioners!

But if you have not read and followed the instructions in week 1, head over to this link first and get used to this practice by following the videos provided in that post: healthunlocked.com/strength...

5Rhythms is a movement meditation practice devised by Gabrielle Roth in the late 1970s.

Here is a short video of her talking about dance as part of a documentary about her development of the 5Rhythms:

If anybody wants to see a full feature documentary from 2012, see the 30 min documentary “Getting to know the founder of the 5 Rhythms Gabrielle Roth” (30 min) at tinyurl.com/59dvtbcx

But I have found the following Irish conceptualisation by Caitriona Nic Ghiollaphádraig really attractive, linking the 5 Rhythms to the beauty of natural landscapes around us, with

1 Flow - Rivers and Lakes. Rooted. Grounded.

2 Staccato - The Mountains. Shapes. Structure.

3 Chaos - Waterfalls, Rainstorms. Release. Letting go.

4 Lyrical - The Shore. The Ocean. Light. Space.

5 Stillness - Views, Skies, the Nights. Pausing. Seeing.

This video is not a follow along video but gives a real insight in how one dance movement practitioner connected the 5Rhythms to her own sense of place.

But here’s our first follow-along, a 15 minute follow-along by the sea:

We have two shorter 5 minute practices for the rest of the week. It’s easy to miss the titles of the 5 rhythms, but glancing at the dancing should enable one to understand which of the rhythms is currently being danced.

The sequence again for reference:

1 Flow

2 Staccato

3 Chaos

4 Lyrical

5 Stillness

Enjoy:

Follow Along Video #2 Short Practice:

Follow Along Video #3 Medium Practice:

So how have you found this movement practice so far?

On our next and last week, we’ll tackle the longer duration practice by following the original music and voice of Gabrielle Roth! Until then, keep moving!

We're already in week 2?!? Argh! Hopefully, I will be able to participate more this week... Last week devolved into chaos (and I can hear the music for it 🤣) because I had to care for my parents more than usual (my Dad was hospitalized after a fall a couple days...). Hopefully, things will normalize again or at least be a bit more predictable this week...

I do recall having squeezed in the brief 5Rhythms video last week, so there's that 😊 Sometimes short is great because it fits in anywhere... It now feels so long ago... 😭

(If anybody else is or was a informal carer, I can highly recommend Emily Kenway's book "Who Cares?" It has been very helpful to me during this time - validating and also outlining ideas who we could care differently... More on the book is here emilykenway.com/who-cares And her ideas are outlined a bit in this article: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi... )

I just completed the Follow Along Video #1 - ahhhhhh, that felt so good! Tbh, I didn't so much follow along but let the music guide my body, every once in a while glancing at the screen to see what Marina Bloom did, letting myself be a bit inspired by that and then letting the 5Rhythm waves carry me.

Thank you, CBDB , for putting this together! I also enjoyed watching the trailer to the documentary. I've marked my calendar to watch the whole thing tonight!

Brilliant! It is quite meditative, isn’t it. I originally thought I would feel silly doing it with my hubby, but we both really always enjoy it. Lots of fun, giggles and mesmerising moments. 👏👏👏👏👍🏽
