I recently reached a major milestone in my rowing journey and have been pondering about the nature of milestones.
This milestone was in sight for quite a few months, so I was excited to see myself getting closer and closer. Some illnesses also slowed down progress, making me even more conscious of that milestone just ahead. I promised myself a running T to celebrate this milestone, so for me, there is even a physical reward.
I’m super proud of having achieved it, but the moment I did, my horizon zoomed out with the 2nd million-meter mark in sight. On my online rowing community, I was even joined by another rower who had reached the million mark on that day, and we immediately set ourselves racing to the second million.
Every milestone is special, but we humans seem to be made to immediately set the next one after reaching the last one. I feel that this is why these online forums are also so important; they keep us in the moment, slow time down, and allow us to dwell, at least for a little while, on the brilliant milestone we have just achieved.
So, what milestones have you set yourselves?
Which ones have you achieved recently?
And if not, might you want to set a lovely new milestone target?
Let us know here in the reply!
Happy Milestone-ing!

Great post. This is absolutely amazing to read-congratulations! I can’t even get my head around how far you’ve rowed.
In terms of strength and flex, I tend not to set goals beyond “swim once a week” or “do a Pilates class regularly”. Maybe that might be something to consider. I think of those things as chill out time but I like the idea of having a gentle target for swimming, especially over the winter when running outdoors time is likely to cut down.
My big milestone recently was getting up to half marathon distance. The event I’m training for is this weekend and I wanted to be absolutely certain that I was able to get all the way round. It was tough on my own down a disused railway track and back but I’m still smiling about it three weeks later! Never, ever thought I’d get here starting c25k as my New Years resolution. Hopefully the next milestone will be a PB on Sunday, but that only means beating the one time I’ve ever run it before! To be honest, the main milestone for that run will be raising some money for a lovely charity that I’ve got a very personal connection with through a close friend who isn’t very well. I’m expecting to be an emotional wreck at the end!
Enjoy shopping for your running T. I bought one yesterday…long sleeved but light for the winter from Ronhill. Feels lovely! Buying running kit is the best.
And isn’t it strange how we use miles and km in running, but meters in rowing! By now, since starting C25k you’ve probably run more than the 1 million meters … at least? My Runkeeper suggests ca 1200 km, so I’ve hit the million meter mark some time back in running. Huh! How did that happen?.
Charity related milestones are awesome! So well done!
And I so agree about buying running kit being the best. Great to know I’m not the only runner loving the long-sleeved Ts. My perfect wear for this weather is a hooded, long-sleeved T with a sleeveless vest on top. It gives me the perfect balance between warmth and breath-ability. And as at the moment, our house is without heating, the long-sleeved T is also perfect for rowing!
Thanks! I’ve only started using a tracking app that counts distance since the HM programme. I’ve looked and I’ve run (at least) 300km (since it undercounts distance). 300,000m, or maybe I’ll go for the unconventional mm run measurement and write it as 300,000,000mm! I like the look of that!
I achieve holding a plank for a minute milestone does that count? Other than that I just have weekly targets for S&F. With running doing the Bristol 10k was definitely my milestone , my first ever live race
