Cross training for running

What cross training do people do to go with their running? I’ve graduated c25k in June and have been running 3 times a week ever since. But I don’t want to have strong running legs whilst the rest of my body gets left behind!

What do you do? :)

Hi JaoJao. I just do the occasional core strength workout.

I do gym, swim and walking. With my gym work especially for running I do squats and planks, I’m not the biggest fan of them but I add them in 😀. The rest of my gym work is just overall body conditioning to tone my muscles, I find a swim once a week helps to loosen my muscles and helps them to recover from the run. There are some good gym free help sheets to get you started here.

I used to love swimming, most gyms make you take a membership, I quite like the idea of a drop in swim!

I don’t know where you are but Better gyms with pools have drop in swims and I think all the local authority pools should have drop-in swims. 😀

I did NHS S&F during C25K and also do lots of walking, the occasional swim, planking, and I do a lot of workouts off the Nike Training Club.

🤣. You don’t have to do all that in one day of course!!

Hi JaoJao congratulations on graduating and for keeping up three runs a week, well done 👍😊

As well as running two or three times a week I walk the dog daily (briskly, he is a speedy Springer spaniel!). I try to do strength work a few times a week (mostly upper body/arms/core) but find it hard to get motivated! I also have a part time physically demanding housekeeping job which is like being at a gym and sauna 😂. Would like to swim but no time. Cycling is good too but can't do that very well with doggie. All the best 😊
