Have a look at the NHS Weight Loss Plan which is on the NHS Choices website. Then sign up for the NHS Weight Loss Forum on Health Unlocked for support.

You've posted in the Strength & Flex forum. There's a good NHS podcast programme (free) you can download and do over 5 weeks (or longer if need be) It won't burn you many calories but it will help you establish an exercise habit and support other activities you may choose to do.

Enjoy!

Pretty simple, Henry...

- for understanding, estimate your energy balance data - how much energy do you consume, how much do you use? if you consume less than you use, you'll lose weight

- once you're at a weight and body composition (muscle vs fat basically) that you like, keep your energy balance neutral (i.e. no excess, no deficit, calories in = calories out) - this will keep you at your ideal weight and you'll be in a lifestyle of equilibrium...the body always seeks this...the process is called homeostasis - you don't really need to work on it, the body does it on its own if you follow natural lifestyle choices and reject the crap that sales & marketing (er) people constantly throw at us

- choose wholefoods - when you shop, think 'would my hunter/gatherer ancestor have eaten this?'; if not, reject it

- does this mean no enjoyment of eating and life? Absolutely the opposite, your tastebuds and appetite will start working as nature intended, you'll be happy

- does this mean no smoking? Absolutely...go figure

- does this mean no alcohol? Absolutely not, very natural thing, enjoy it but don't abuse it...stick with beer and wine, it's not concentrated alcohol, drink plenty of water to dilute it further; if you can't tolerate alcohol, don't drink it

- eat fruit or salad as a starter (helps digestion); enjoy wine with food, also helps digestion

- what else? Not much really, except some detail about how to estimate energy intake/use, how to increase basal metabolism through exercise, how to buy, prepare, eat food

- sadly, many people have lost the plot on all of this; I'm interested because my kids won't have a NHS because all the cash is being burned treating CVD, T2 diabetes, kidney disease, some cancers...all things which can be prevented/reduced with a bit of thought ...and those lovely sales and marketing people can go and do something useful like trying to alter the brain chemistry of 'religious' ...or just extremists, otherwise all of this is a waste of time.

You know what? It's just a matter of eating less and exercising more, as other people have commented.

I'd just like to add that it's also important to understand what made you eat too much in the first place, i.e. what got you fat. That's the real issue.

People overeat for any number of reasons. Understanding why can be very difficult and painful for some, but it's essential to come to terms with.

Generally speaking, it is about eating less calories than your body burns in a day. I found a free App "My Fitness Pal" where I set a weight loss goal, tracked calories and exercise - lost 23 lbs. eat filling and healthy foods too - vegetables with every meal really helps me, don't get hungry in the evenings now and sweet treats (my favourite is low sugar jelly with low fat ice cream - feels naughty but isn't)! I have given up fizzy drinks, crisps n chocolate bars because I prefer a filling meal rather than a snack! Still have an occasional treat (slice of cake, meal out) but track all the calories.

Exercise is great for building fitness, confidence and improving mood but I haven't been able to eat back calories burned and still lose weight. I have completed Couch to 5K running programme and run 3 times a week and now even enjoy running (sounds crazy I know)!! Julie
