Hi, I was prescribed this following a recent SIBO diagnosis, but for 28 days not 2 weeks. I had no issues or problems with it whatsoever and it helped my SIBO. I finished the course about 6 weeks ago and so far no return of symptoms.

My main symptoms had been far too much belching and feeling nauseous for the first few hours in the morning, I had put the latter down to my acid reflux at night but it must have been the SIBO.

My reflux has also not been as bad since taking the rifaximin. Hope it works for you, too.

Thank you ,

It actually feeling easier already, Gastroenterologist said I can get another prescription it needed just have to ring secretary. So will see how I go.

Been o. Probiotics and low fodmap for weeks after a course of Metrodazole prescription from doctors, however this medication seemed very harsh and didn’t work once I stopped taking them .

Thank you for your response.

Stay well !

I’ve started rifaximin recently, on a schedule of twice a day for 7 days, then repeat after 3 weeks. This is to replace the metronidazole I had been taking for over a year, which seemed to have lost its effects.

The rifaximin has worked very well. Slight queasiness on the first day, but then the horrific bloating went away. I’m back at Rheumy in a couple of months to check how I’m doing.

Good morning Buttsy. I have been prescribed rifaxamin many times. I find it takes about a week or so to work. About ten days or so after I have finished the course my SIBO returns. Unfortunately, they won't keep prescribing it, and next time are talking about alternating it with another antibiotic that I can't remember the name of. Good luck. Hope it works for you. X

I’m on

Rifaximin 2 weeks on (3 a day) 2 weeks off. I was rotating with metronidazole but had to stop it as side effects too awful. I think it helps a lot although I’m currently travelling on it and feeling really sick - mostly because the people I’m staying with and a son all worry I’m losing too much weight now and kept shovelling sweet stuff like ice cream at me for the calories yesterday. Anything sweet adds to the SIBO / Gastroparesis mix and my reflux is awful! But when I’m in my normal routine it works very well. No side effects .

Hi Old Ted,

Thanks for your response, glad to hear there seem to be few side affects as I found the Metronidazole harsh, this seems to better so far, but I have a bowel loop that seems to be causing gastro issue too, hoping to get that sorted too.my symptoms seem to be mounting up.

Hi Buttsy,

I too am prescribed Rifaximin. It’s been like a miricle drug for me although I’m never completely free of symptoms but it means I can have some sort of life. At the moment I alternate with other antibiotics sometimes only a week before having to have another course but have had some good breaks lasting longer. Metronidazole works for me too but awful side effects and all of them except Rifaximin cause uti problems as I have urine retention. One thing my gastroenterologist suggested was cutting out probiotics/ yoghurt while taking Rifaximin and that seemed to work for me. I deluge myself with them in between courses of antibiotics. There is conflicting advice on this though. Good luck with it.

hi,

Yes ,I was unsure about probiotics whilst on Rifaximin.

Yes Rifaximin is definitely gentler than metronidazole.

Thanks for your response and stay well .😃
