Hip Pain

Hip pain...have had this for weeks now and it is showing no sign of going away anytime soon. I cannot even bend down low enough to put my sock on or trousers ...I don't even know how it happened. I woke up tried to get up from bed and was in agony. My osteoarthritis in my knees is severe so having this pain at the top of my leg is just the icing on the pain cake! Am on gabapentin but not really doing much to take the pain level down. Have Oramorph which I take at night to help with sleep. Tramadol is not much better in reducing pain level either. My husband gets annoyed with my cries of pain when I try to move ...I think it upsets him. Anyone else have this problem?

Not had this relating to scleroderma but have ongoing pain where ribs join the spine - also osteoarthritis thought to be the cause and I’m told not linked to the LSSc. Best help for me has been an osteopath helping sooth and de-inflame the muscles around and then rebuild muscle strength to take the pressure off the joints some. That and hot baths, heat pads and pain killers as needed.

I woke up one morning with terrible hip pain and couldn't walk. Mine was diagnosed as calcification of the tendons or ligaments. 3 years later and it is still there but not nearly as bad as I can walk but it aches and stiffens up if I sit still for too long.

Hi, how does calcification happen? This sounds very worrying for you. Not to mention the pain it must cause you. x

Apparently it builds up over time and then suddenly causes pain as it presses on a painful area. I don't have calcification in areas like other people where they break through the skin, mine are around shoulders and hips which cause mobility problems. I had surgery on shoulder to remove it but it wasn't really successful as there were complications and a lot of the calcification came back so now I just have steroid injections to help with the pain and movement in my shoulders but they won't do this in my hips. Physio didn't really help me. Physiotherapist said calcium would break down over time but whilst pain is less severe and manageable now it has never gone away.

Yes, I had terrible groin/hip pain a few years back for over a year. Getting in and out of a car was excruciating n also thru night. I actually had to physically lift my leg with my hands to move it. I had X-ray which showed osteoarthritis but i think the pain started when walking uphill. I had lots of physio sessions to help but if this is not an option there are exercises on line/YouTube for hip pain, altho don’t do them at the moment. That would be further down line. As ladytrundle says use heat packs for now n you can also try heat pack - cold pack - heat pack for about 15 mins a time to try n get blood flow in area going. Also massage area with ibuprofen cream or freeze spray. It doesn’t cure by no means but can hopefully make it bearable. Good luck.

Same on having to lift my leg when lying flat as can only lie for a short time before having to bend it to ease the pain. This has been going on for about 3 or 4 months now and the pain has not really lessened ...doctor sent me for an x ray just to make sure there wasn't any fracture there. Results came back and doc. said it is osteoarthritis, but how can it come on so rapidly? I was okay one day, yes, knees have severe osteoarthritis but pain was mainly on them not on my hip area, then I get up, or try to, next day and the pain was excruciating. Am not sure this is the cause of it, I believe it is muscular...maybe I do have an area of osteo. in my hip but am hoping that this will ease off eventually and I can actually get my sock on and maybe even bend down low enough to do my garden. I had a really, really painful neck which had bothered me for a few weeks. Trying to turn my head would give me a shocking pain so when I had to see my consultant I mentioned it to her and she had a look at me and a wee feel at my neck then told me it was probably 'wear and tear' ...osteoarthritis in other words, but a few weeks later my neck pain was gone. So, not all pain can be put down to osteoarthritis. Just fingers crossed this is what is wrong with my hip.

Also you’ve possibly tried this if you have knee pain but maybe a flattish pillow under your legs to sleep just to raise them slightly. You can try different areas under legs to see if any help.

Got you there momo17...I have a memory foam pillow at the side of the bed for just this purpose...I either have my legs straight out on top of it but when my behind gets sore lying in one position I put it between my legs at the top and turn on my side. But, the best thing I have is to take oramorph before I head up to bed and this seems to help me sleep better than anything at the moment. Do you get absolutely soaking wet with sweat during the night...I wake up and even my hair and scalp are wringing wet...but am not overly hot so what is that all about?

Yes, I’ve had that but I’m menopausal n I do feel hot. Also on raynauds medication which can make you flush. I have a friend who has scleroderma n suffers same. Do you take sildenifil or anything like that? Could be medication related x

Good information momo17. So, will have a look on youtube and use heat packs on groin area which is the worse part of my hip pain. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my message. Much appreciated. 👍

That is no bother. I know how painful it can be n it can take a long time to heal to the point it’s not so bothersome any more. I still get problems with it but as soon as they start I just throw every treatment at it to keep it from troubling me long term. Getting on socks was really difficult for me too. There is such a thing as a sock aid that can help with this. They are not too dear on Amazon or your occupational health therapist if you have one should be able to sort you out with one. Take care x

This has recently happened to me - on Saturday morning up, woke up with hip pain - just sudden onset. Difficult to get up from sitting; also getting out of the care - I only tried yesterday. Hoping it doesn't last too long.
