Reversing Osteoporosis

Hi at the age of 50 i found out i had osteopinia,i started doing weight training and yoga at the gym 4 times a week, when had dexa scan it had not gone any worse, then 2 yrs later scan showed it had gone worse from -2.3to-2.9 .as i have not been doing as much exercise no yoga and only 1-2 times a week i am thinking this has had an effect,it was hard to get to a gym as i had moved to a different area, but i am now in a possition to go back to my exercise routine .the doctor wants me to take a bisphosphonate and a repeate scan in 5yrs,i dont like the idea of taking medications, has anyone had good results with continuing exercise as i think this is what i would like to do.

I take d3 and k2. K2 apparently redirects any excess calcium that may otherwise be in the blood towards the bones where it should be.

I have been put on bisphosphonates previously when in hospital but am not on them now. I believe if you can keep on top of exercise and your vitamin intake and keep both optimal then you shouldn't need bisphosphonates.

I am not a doctor, but I believe that doctors do not get it right all of the time

Exercise and diet can help definitely, I was diagnosed with osteopenia at 26, which lead me to research and do whatever can be done. So I started running and walking every day, doing weights and stretching, and eat as much calcium and iron rich food as I can. I don't drink alcohol or fizzy drinks either. Thankfully it also helped improve my Raynauds.

I kept putting off the follow up scan through fear of the results, but 12 years after the original scan, I had a follow up and it showed my bones were back to the density they should be for someone of my age. I've avoided medication the whole time.

I continue the calcium and iron rich diet and exercise regularly in the hope that I can keep osteoporosis at bay.

I wish you all the best of luck and health.

Merry Christmas

Another thing to think about is - are you on any medication for reflux? I take 40mg Emozol tablets daily and they can inhibit the absorption of Vitamin D which helps your body absorb calcium. If the body needs more calcium it takes it from your bones, usually the hips. I have been told that I don't have osteoporosis now but my hips are below what they should be for my age. My spine is OK. I am on a course of Vitamin D and am having another DEXA scan in the New Year to see if this is the problem.

Hi i am not on any other medications, when i was first diogñosed they checked my vitamin d which was low,do you know how often this should be checked.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia 20 years ago and every scan since then had come back with no further deterioration. I am 66 now and my last scan showed that my bones though a little thinner were normal for my age. I don't exercise except for walking as I have severe arthritis so I concentrate on the best diet I can. In all the time I have had this I have never been offered any treatment at all not even a calcium supplement, so I must be doing something right
