I’ve been insomniac for a very long time but due to chronic health problems getting worse I hardly slept for 3 months . After trying many combinations of meds I found something that works for me but I’d like to slowly cut down on the zoplicone as I’m on 40 mg a night( it’s been 3 months so still quite new) 6 promethazine tablets and 200 mg of melatonin.
I’m cutting down by quarter and replacing it by magnesium and gaba just before bed.
How much magnesium should I take? I hear high doses but how much is that? Any other recommendations for replacement as I slowly cut down on the zoplicone? Can’t take antidepressants and don’t want anything addictive. Many thanks

Hello again. I'm in a similar situation although just on the zop. Someone else mentioned magnesium too so will look forward to someone advising amounts and a good brand. Why can't you take anti depressants? I can't as I have epilepsy and it lowers the seizure threshold. If I come of zop I had a seizure before and also find it like being in hell and don't want to feel like that for the rest of my life. I have 2 cancers so need my sleep and can't be feeling like I'm going crazy from no sleep and withdrawal so just trying to taper as slow as possible while finding out what will help. Just joined from couch to 5k an app that will hopefully get me exercise to change my health mind wise and help me sleep and use up nervous energy. Diet and positive thinking I've been trying to change too but had to drop some negative friends. Always here if you want to chat, compare notes.
Some seizure reducing meds are used as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or sleep aids. Gabapentin, lamotrigine, Carbamazepine...... While lamotrigine causes insomnia for some it's also been studied for it's tendency to reduce sleep problems that are at least partially caused by ptsd or c-ptsd. I've used lamotrigine and gabapentin in the past as sleep aids.
Most of the best sleep aids for long term effects with minimal side effects are not listed specifically as an insomnia treatment. Depending on your specifics and causes of insomnia you often have to get creative to find truly useful insomnia treatment without lots of side effects or negatives.
