I have been on trazodone (50 mg) for about 18 years. It does help me fall asleep, and if I forget to take it, I can't fall asleep. I don't seem to have any negative effects from it. Recently I decided to try to cut back on it a little bit at a time. For the past month I have cut off a little chip from each pill, so I'm taking about 45 mg. instead of 50. So far , so good. I still fall asleep.
Another factor for me is hypothyroidism. If I'm not taking enough thyroid, I start waking up
earlier and earlier, like 3:30, then 2:30, then 1:30. If I'm taking too much I wake up and stay awake. So I have to adjust my thyroid dose a little from time to time, probably because I also
have Graves' antibodies and I vary between being a little hyper and a little hypo (Hashimoto's).
And then there is the prednisone effect. I am on 6 mg right now. I take 5.5 mg at 8 AM and save .5 mg for dinner time. I found out that if I do this, I don't wake up at 4 AM.
