SCT and Kidney disease???

Hello,

I'm really glad I came across this website bc my son was born with SCT and didn't have any complications until he turned 17. He went into renal failure with 25% kidney function. This was very shocking and unsettling for me. He was eventually diagnosed with Minimal Change Disease...Nephrotic Syndrome. I asked doctors then could this be coming from the Sickle Cell Trait and was told over and over and over "NO". My son is now 24 and has several flares and is currently in the hospital. He is leaking large amounts of protein and has fluid on his R lung. The doctors have completed a kidney biopsy and states there is no cancer and it no longer looks like he has Minimal Change Disease. They are stumped on a diagnosis. I have been doing research and came across several articles stating Chronic Kidney Disease is liked to Sickle Cell trait. Anyone else has experience with this??

People with Sickle Cell disease are prone to have kidney damage as well poorly functioning lungs, but I have never heard of this for Sickle Cell Trait. Could their be other genetic causes?

Hello, I just wondered whether your son may have SC disease. It is not the sicke trait, and it is not the full blown SS disease. It is a combination of sickle and another mutant cell, and it can mimic the full blown SS when the body is under stress. Myself and four of my siblings all have this. A combination of Sickle cell and Thalassemia.

Same bull they told me when I was younger. Also ended up on dialysis but a good Dr, did a kidney cleaning on me. And they still won't just refuse to say trait, because we have made lie out of their controlled science studies.

In my experience many doctors, particularly non-hematologist have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to sickle cell.

As a carrier of sickle cell trait your son expresses sickle celled red blood cells in his blood. These sickled cells break down faster than normal blood. When the blood breaks down it is processed in the kidney (that is why urine is yellow). As a result people with sickle cell's kidneys work harder than a normal persons and as a result they are more likely to have kidney problems.

These problems can be acerbated by other health problems. For the doctor to say that sickle cell trait is a non-issue is irresponsible.

Please make sure your son drinks plenty of water in order to reduce the concentration of the filtrate that his kidneys have to process. He will have to pee more but should be heathier. Remember, heathly pee is clear.
