CA 125?

My life story: I was a healthy person with no medical issues or symptoms ever. I went to the ER with sudden and severe abdominal pain thinking that I was having food poisoning... after a CT scan and ultra sound, a big leaking cyst was diagnosed above my right ovary. The doctor tested for CA 125 and the level was 9200.

I was transferred to a larger women's hospital and required emergency surgery. After 6 hours a complete hysterectomy was done as well as the removal of a grapefruit sized mass on one of my ovaries. Sadly, I was diagnosed with endometrioid carcinoma, but luckily only level 1C. The doctor recommended me a treatment plan to have three chemo (Carboplatin and Taxol) and three hormonal treatments. I just finished with the third chemo and awaiting a CT scan. The thing which is bothering me is my CA 125 is still '7'? Am I cancer free or are there still cancer cells in my body? Is my body considered cancer free only if my CA level is at '0' ?

Hi, yes that number is good. My CA125 was 19.4 a few weeks ago. Best wishes

7 is good. Everyone has cells in their bodies. Just some peoples are active and some are not. Under 35 is “is what they call normal”. But a CA125 is just a marker. It’s not always reliable. Mine is a 33 and I currently have active cancer. So my “CA125” is not a reliable marker anymore for them to use

You are in the normal ca125 range is 0-30, most people will never be a 0, I have been btwn 4 an 7, 5 yrs April with no sign of disease, if no reoccurance in 5 yrs they will consider you cancer free. I have clear cell carcinoma stage 3 c . you will be fine, just check your ca125, regularly. ❤❤Liz

Hi . Like bahamas22 my ca125 is not of any use to indicate disease . It was in the thousands on diagnosis in 2014 prior to surgery TAH salpingonectomy and omentectomy . It was 4 after and ever since - I had first line taxol and carbo . Thought I was clear as ca125 was 4 all way through to December 2018 when I found a mass in pelvic area . . Active tumour with lymph node involvement so cannot have surgery - ca125 still 4 !

Had 2nd line chemo carbo/ caelyx . Tumour and nodes shrunk slightly . Now on niraparib ..

SO YES - CA125 IS NOT ALWAYS RELIABLE INDICATOR OF ABSCENCE OR PRESCENCE OF ACTIVE CANCER

There is much literature documenting the imperfections of the CA125 blood test. Interestingly, a fairly recent article finds that the rate of change of the CA125 number may be a little more helpful than the actual number. So get your CA125 tested regularly and graph the numbers.
