Bones only until recently. Last pet scan showed a 1.4cm lesion on my liver which was in January. At that time I asked what could be done about my liver. Her response was basically nothing. She changed my course of treatment and my next pet scan is April 18th. I myself feel I should at least be given some options to address my liver. I was thinking of contacting my radiologist about doing some type of radiation. I just don’t understand why my Onc is not so concerned about my liver. Btw I had a high resolution ct scan today and results showed my liver lesion is now 2.2cm. That seems like an extensive amount of growth since January. I’m currently doing iv. Chemo 3 times a month.
Sorry if I’m all over the place with this post but I’m only 66 years old and feel like my Onc team has just given up.

Hi - my Mum has MBC since 2020. She was on ibrance which held the cancer for 3 years but then a small liver growth was seen (I think around 1.5cm). They did a liver ablasion (basically a hot needle to destroy the cancer) which worked. They did however change treatments - and that has been going on until now (a new treatment every 3 months) but unfortunately there are now multiple new liver tumours and they are growing fast. Most recently she was on Taxol which held everything other than the liver cancer - so we are now stressing as treatment has stopped whilst we wait for a liver biopsy to assess the tumour genetics and then move onto next line (note Mum is feeling worse each day - just need to get her some treatment as CA 153 tumour markers are almost 2,000!). We don’t know what to do!
So perhaps push for a liver ablasion? I’ve read about other possibilities such as gamma knife. But for sure the liver has a mind of its own and addressing that is important. For my Mum the other new treatments did seem to work in the liver for a while so I’m sure you’ll have lots of options on treatments that will hold it so I wouldn’t panic. But also maybe further down the line look at a liver biopsy to ensure they know the make up of the cancer.
I would think that since the liver involvement is new, a biopsy would automatically be done unless you had one recently. There are many options of treating liver mets but knowing your receptor status is very important.
Hi! My mom also had bone only MBC since 2018 but last year several liver lesions appeared. She had SBRT (radiation therapy) for her liver lesions and stayed on the same treatment for another year. Last week new liver lesion was found and they again treated it with radiation. Hopefully you can find a radiation oncologist who can consult you on radiotherapy. We always consult with regular oncologist and radiation oncologist. Best wishes!
I would push for a second opinion. I went through the same thing and ended up switching to my second opinion Oncologist…I love her! I have lots of liver involvement and once my first doctor (who has been with me since 2020) said I would be dead by May, I knew it was time for a change.
Absolutely agree that it is time for a second opinion. Another medical oncologist would be the one to ask for options, including radiation, ablation, change in meds. At least, you might get an explanation of why your oncologist is doing what she is doing.
Hi. I had liver only mets (3) and an interventional radiologist did the ablation procedure and got rid of them. I have a MRI every 3-4 months for him and they have not reactivated (I dont know if that’s the right term!). In addition, every 4 months my onc orders CT and bone scans.
DEMAND a referral to radiation oncology on an emergency basis. Gamma Knife radiation would be a great option if possible! I’ve had 19 treatments for liver Mets. It’s doable with minor fatigue as the only side effect I’ve ever had.
Think about changing oncologists. There is NO excuse for this kind of treatment, you are certainly within your rights to have someone attentive and reliable .
My wife, who has stage 4 Breast Mets spread to bones terminal cancer has been on Xeloda which is working quite well, started 9th cycle yesterday, CA 15-3 markers are rising and her liver AST levels are also rising yet Nothing is showing up in her Pet Scan, Our Radiologist told us if Mets do show up on future scans that they would do targeted radiation to them. Xeloda does cause Liver inflammation and that may be what is going on with my wife's situation, I think you should get with a Radiologist ASAP. Prayers for your healing from the two of us.
I have Breast cancer metastisized to liver and bones.I have been on 7 different treatments since 2018.I find Enhertu to have hair the thinning and fatigue my only side-effects.
I know every situation is different, but I got a second opinion and that changed things for me. I’ve had Ibrance and Kisqali, but they wipe out my white count. I’m on tamoxifen, but have a new lesion which will get radiation. That’s so I don’t have to change meds yet since I’m about out of options on new meds.
I started having liver Mets about 7 years into MBC. I was put on Enhertu, which is supposed to address liver Mets. I was on it for a year and then switched to eribulin. It’s holding everything steady and in some placed I’m NED. Ask whether you qualify for Enhertu. (Her2 positive or low)
I was on Enhertu for 10 months and then showed progression in my bones. She then switched me to Eribulin. I’ve been on this since January due to the liver lesion, I have to say I’m doing well on it No side effects I hope that helps anyone who is thinking of Eribulin
