Back pain + Radiation
Life2990, I want to answer you to bump up the post. I have not had bone radiation but have read on here and other discussion boards that it can really decrease pain from bone Mets . I'm so sorry you've been in pain since Friday. Seems like these things happen to me on a Friday night so we have to wait in pain for Monday to hear from our oncologists.
Send a MyChart messsge or give your oncologist a call asap tomorrow . Palliative care is also a pain mgmt group at some cancer centers - see if your oncology center has Palliative care .
I hope you get some pain relief soon !
I had radiation to my hip. After a few days it got really painful. I could walk, but only if I had to. It eased by itself after 3-4 weeks. Now I have no pain at all. Hope it does the same for you.
I'm so sorry that you are not able to walk. Sending hugs and prayers that radiation will help with your pain. I had radiation when I was first diagnosed but they were small lesions that were not causing any pain. My doctor wanted them gone before they did cause pain. The radiation worked and the lesions have never come back. Hope that will be the case for you.
Sorry to hear of your back pain. My experience was, I had back pain radiating to my rib, which was referred from my T6 where I had a large lesion. It was difficult sleeping or sitting. Since having radiation to that area I've had no more problems. It took a week or so to fully improve. The treatment was over 18 months ago. I wish you the same great outcome.
Hi Life2999. My Mom had Mets in her spine radiated in 2023. She had 10 daily treatments. She was pretty much in agony and also unable to walk. After 2 wks the pain resolved and she hasn’t taken anything for pain since. She can walk with a walker and stand now…
It really helped her. I hope you also have the same good results. Oh- one thing that we were not made aware of is you can get burns on the radiated areas. Desitin cream(the cream used for baby’s bottoms) helped a lot to heal the burns after the radiation. The Onc suggested we use Desintin cream when we contacted him concerned about the burns showing up. Healed up like a charm once we started applying. Really hope you get great results and relief of pain too!!!
I have had radiation to my spine twice and it definitely helped my pain. It sometimes gets worse before it gets better. Hopefully it will help you too💕
Hi
Just want to basically say the same thing the previous posts have said. I have Mets to the spine as well. So much pain! I get where you are coming from. But like our other warriors on this forum, I am now pain free due to the radiation. I can’t lie, it did take some time but I don’t even have to take Tylenol! I had my radiation in April of 2023. I want to say by June I was pain free. There is a light at the end of the radiation treatment. Sending prayers

I’ve had terrible back pain twice between cancer meds. New meds are miracles and get rid of pain.
Hi! I had bine radiation... i forget which ones of the hundred on my spine but I wasn't able to complete it. Even w a few I did feel some relief
I don't have painful spine mets, but I do want to share the experience of a fellow (sister?) mbc victim. The pain in her spine, agonizing, turned out to be bones collapsing. It was not treated in time, so it is something to explore more and radiation can help.
I've had radiation to both hips and to a painful scapula too, though not (yet) to the cancer in my spine--the chemo has worked on it, thank heaven. But the brief treatments I got to hips and scapula all worked amazingly well. Sometimes it took a few days, but the pain decreased steadily. I was incredibly grateful for how quickly they got me in and treated too. I don't fear future painful areas anymore and that's taken a lot of stress away. Good luck with your treatments...we're lucky to live in a time when cancer care has improved so much.
sorry you are in pain. Can I ask when you were diagnosed with bone Mets and what medication you are on now?
I had bone Mets all over spine, pelvis, skull, ribs, and femur. I know the pain and it is debilitating.
I never had radiation. I had started Ibrance and Letrozole and it took a bit to get over the side effects but the bone Mets started to resolve and around 2-3 months the pain was so much less. So I was lucky. I was prepared to do radiation but it resolved and now the bones are building back up with no signs of progression. I found heat helped me and done good pain meds.
I hope you get some relief one way or the other.
Radiation will remove pain as in the same position as you. I had radiation to back 4 yrs ago and still ok. I do lots of other stuff as well.
