Hi, just wanted to hear some feedback on your experiences with radiation to the hip.
I’ve had radiation on my hip twice before but really didn’t have much pain so I didn’t notice much.
Now a year or so later and in the last 2 months my Petscan shows I have multiple lesions in the same hip, but in different areas. I’ll be having radiation on it soon, but I can’t walk or lift my leg much or without limping due to the pain.
Just wondering if this is common and if anyone has had relief from the pain in your hip or easier mobility and how long that took? How many sessions did you do?
thanks for any input, I can’t drive, walk very far or clean much…I hate it, I feel like a total social outcast right now!

Hi Verbena1: So sorry to hear of your suffering. I have had hip SBRT radiation on my original MBC tumor in the left acetabular bone. Along with Ibrance/Faslodex/Xgeva, that tumor is gone & my hip socket is doing much better. Since the radiation in May 2019, I had a few Sacrum spots showing on a PET/CT SCAN in Nov 2021. I had targeted SBRT to both sides of the sacrum. I had immediate pain relief.
However, about a year later (Oct 2022) I felt low back pain that affected my ability to walk. The MRI showed I had stress fractures in my sacrum. Come to find out, it was caused from the radiation a year earlier.
Consequently, I’m very cautious about doing radiation again. I walk with a limp but I’m trying to strengthen those leg & back/glut muscles to help me get back to a normal gait.
My experience has taught me that “less is more” with radiation.
wow thanks for the input, that’s good to know. I’ve had radiation twice to the hip before, so it concerns me that it could cause stress fractures. I appreciate the good thoughts 🌸💕
Sorry to hear that Verbena. I’ve had one off radiation to my hip twice. The first time for pain when Mets were first diagnosed and it was instant relief. After a few years on Xgeva, ibrance and Letrozole it grew again so I had a hip replacement and another dose of radiation and now been clear for 14 months. Hard to know what’s the best way to go sometimes. Best wishes.
