One of the key phrases we want to hear every three months is 'No progression'. The longer we can get out of a particular line of treatment the better. So I was somewhat alarmed to read various reports which show that proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole and lansoprazole can significantly affect the length of progression free survival of those on Palbociclib.
I suffer from a hiatus hernia and as a result have quite severe acid reflux and so have been on lanzaprozole for years. I'm also on Ibrance (Palbociclib) and have been for 11 months.
My oncologist has referred me back to my GP for a change in medication when I asked him about it. In the meantime I've stopped the lansoprazole.
So if any of you are also on this combination and were not aware of this report, you may like to read it and ask your doctors about it. I found it quite worrying.
I just learned the same contraindications for xeloda/capecitabine. Onc yesterday said one solution would be to just increase the chemo dosage so more is available to be absorbed. Omeprazole makes me loopy, so I'm trying the generic for pepcid (famotidine) to see how it goes. Best of luck to you!
I stopped taking it when I read the report and have been taking Tagemet, but I don't think it works as well. I think the pharmacist at the hospital mentioned famatidine so I'll ask the GP for that.
I suggested increasing the dose of the Ibrance to my onc and he didn't like that idea as a suppose it could be a bit hit and miss.
Yea every onc is different. There just isn't enough data, so I feel like I'm muddling along relying on gut instincts to show me the way at times. I experienced quite a bit of bloating today taking famotidine after breakfast. Maybe I should try taking it before. 😕
That's the problem. I was the one who reported it to my onc, not the other way round. I thought maybe he should've been a bit more pro-active checking to see if patients were on PPIs. It made me wonder if it really was that much of a problem, but I don't want to take any chances. in the meantime, I'm going to try pine nut oil - a natural remedy and see if that helps!
It's very worrying isn't it. I know it is only one report, but the findings were significant. We all know how important it is to stay on each line of treatment for the longest amount of time without progression.

I found that article a while ago and immediately stopped taking omaprezole. Didn't want anything to get in the way of the Ibrance working! My doctor prescribed famotidine as an alternative, and I've been on that ever since, although do need to take care with eating rich food and too much dairy.
I feel the same. I want the Ibrance to work for a long, long time and although the PPI controlled my reflux symptoms well, my fear of the Ibrance failing was greater. I will see what my GP comes up with.
