Hi ladies. I’m kind of worried. My mom is visiting my sister and we just found out that my sister got COVID even though she was vaccinated. I’m very anxious. What if my mom gets it as well. Mom has MBC with lung mets. She is vaccinated. Did anyone here get COVID with MBC?
Thank you
Saba

She will have PCR test tomorrow. It took my sister 10 days to find out she has covid. She was keep testing for 10 days, she was symptomatic and every test was negative and after 10 days today test showed positive result
She did. But she also had her PCR test a day before which was negative it’s been 3 days since my mom came to London,so far so good. We had PCR test today waiting for results. Also my sister ordered rapid antigen tests to check my mom every 2 days. I hope Pfizer will protect her.
Hi AK57, I agree w/ SpiffyCJ that a test is in order, for sure. Or multiple tests, especially given your family's recent experience.
But, to be honest, I'm ever so slightly less freaked out about exposure than I was before the...monoclonal?...treatments were developed/approved. It's still very scary...and risky...but at least now we have some interventions that can really help?
I assume your sister is not going anywhere near your mother at this point...And the vaccine undoubtedly will help her. But you are where you are so, as difficult as it is, I would "just" try to get through the uncertainty?
I really am wishing the best for your mom and your entire family...Please do let us know how it goes...(heart),
My mom got COVID last year in March before her diagnose and I’m sure she had cancer at that time, cause her doctor said that her cancer is in her body for at least 3-4 years now and she’s been having an inverted nipple for almost 4 years. And before her treatment in March 2021 she still had high antibodies. Now she is vaccinated, but the problem is low white blood cells, which means low immune system. My sister picked her up yesterday from airport and they were in the car together for 2 hours, both with masks though. They came back home my sister had her test done and was negative. This morning she woke up and had fewer and she went to her another apartment and staying there since morning. She had repeat test in the morning again negative, afternoon was negative as well. She called us 2 hours ago and said that night test was positive. Anyways she is gonna stay there. I’m thinking maybe we should go back to US as soon as possible,in case if God forbid my mom gets it we have access to hospitals and doctors?!?!
Oh, wow, AK57, so much going on!!! Yeah, I don't know what I'd do, e.g. rush your mom onto a plane before - god forbid - a test comes up positive or stay put, hoping for the best, which is likely what will happen?
I don't even want to weigh in because there are so many variables that go into this decision, but I will wish the best for you all! I am hopeful that it all turns out well!
I wouldn’t over react. She probably wont get it since your sister seems to have light case. I had covid before vaccinated with very low white cell count. But i had a mild case. Only 24 hour virus with fever and body aches. But i tested positive a week later when symptoms were all gone. I only had mets to bones and i was on Ibrance.
This is a rough situation for your mother, and the rest of you! I think that if I were in her shoes, I would phone my oncologist and ask for advise. Perhaps your sister could ask her own doctor for the name of a good onc there, too. I'd also be doing alot of disinfecting, lol. But that is me, and I tend to feel better if I have a plan B just in case. This must be really awful for all of you. Sending love and prayers.....
Hi Saba, I had COVID. I had only had 1 vaccine shot at the time. Overall, I had a mild case, but I did end up with a piggyback pneumonia infection. I monitored my temperature and my blood oxygen levels at home and went to A&E when I got a fever over 38, which is what my little emergency card says to do because of my neutropenia risk. I was given antibiotics in A&E and was home by morning. Recovered fine and the doctors said it was a mild case that it was the a bacterial pneumonia that was actually what made me need to go to A&E and get antibiotics. I think the big thing is to monitor the temperature if worried about low blood cells and call the on call doctor if goes above 38. Even with the A&E trip, I was really only sick for a week and it was no where near as bad as I was worried it might be. For me it wasn't as bad as the flu. Also, my doctor has had other MBC patients with Covid and has not run into difficulties so far with anyone else.
I had covid last December before I was vaccinated and have mets in my mediastinum (space between the lungs). I had no symptoms other than losing my sense of taste for a few days. I have heard about many people since who also had cancer and again had no symptoms and there are various theories about that. Hopefully your mum will be absolutely fine🙏🏼
Firstly I think you should all stay put. Travelling anywhere risks spreading to others. Secondly keep testing. Thirdly if your mum tests positive get medical advice quickly so that any preventive medication can be given to protect her health as her immune system will be low. Meanwhile keep those infected, isolated and be careful with hygeine and test regularly. Good luck. X
I had Covid in March 2020...waaaay back when. Was sick for two weeks. Held off on Ibrance for a week. No longterm effects. But I somehow feel this virus has mutated a bit since then. But still..deep breaths...and yes, call your mom's oncologist!
Some preventive things: vitamin c and zinc uptake. Nose cleaning with netty pot and small bit of peroxide (look up proper amounts from internet... this is Dr. Peter McCoullough's suggestion) if you can get ivermectin, it is used as a prophylactic... hoping she fights of off.
She will most likely not be allowed on the plane as they will ask her if she has recently been in contact with anyone with COVID plus it might already be listed in a country data base. Wow, what a stressful time!!! I am so sorry she is so far away--doesnt make it any easier. Where did she travel to?
London. We all are here now. She was in Azerbaijan for 1 month, she went there to see my dad after 2 years. 3 days ago she traveled back to London and in a month we are going back to LA. We are having family reunion after 3 years. Such a bad luck,I was stressing out so much since yesterday. My sister is away since yesterday and not gonna come back home for 1 week. As my husband said it happened and stressing out is not gonna help anyone . Hopefully she doesn’t get it
So sad and difficult. But she and you will be fine, just take care of yourself and get lots of rest!!! So sorry your wonderful reunion got messed up. I am sure there were many wonderful moments to remember! Deep breaths!!
I got covid July 2020. Before vaccinations were out. I only had bone mets. It was such a light case i thought i had 24 hour flu. Had light fever off and on following 5 days. So i tested for covid and it was positive. Not a big deal at all. Symptoms were all gone by time i got results.
I stumbled upon the following article that describes cases of people who lost their cancer diagnoses after developing covid: dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...
While I'm not deliberately exposing myself to covid to address my MBC, I found the article fascinating. It also made me less afraid of covid.
Dear Saba---For goodness sake, stay where you are for the remainder of your visit. Time spent with your sister nearby is valuable to you all, especially your mother. We of the MBC clan are stronger than we look. That includes your mother. Just ask her opinion. She'll tell you. Further more, I lived in Scotland for many years and admire the National Health Services. If you need them they will be there for you, never mind any insurance palaver.Frances
I know. I also got protection on our tickets, there is medical expenses insurance as well. So far me and mom are ok. My sister got the worst case even though she is vaccinated. Anyways she is not staying with us. Hopefully she gets better soon.
