Hot tub
Did your onc tell you what she was concerned about? I take a hot bath almost every night and love it. There is a lot of info online about how to safely enjoy hot tubs...don't let them get too hot, don't stay in longer than 10 minutes, and especially keep them very clean. That may be one of her concerns, getting an infection if your blood counts are low, or if you have a port. Of course you wouldn't go in after radiation or if you were feeling ill. But I agree that they are very relaxing and good for pain management. Enjoy!
Hi Tracey,
Enjoy your hot tub. I wonder why your oncologist doesn’t want you to get one? Were you given a reason?
Sophie
She said she worries about germs from other people going in it, but it will be mainly for me and my partner he will keep it clean and will have a shower before we get in
Hi Tracey,
I see! That makes sense. But if you are careful and ensure that you shower before and after use and keep it clean I don't see a problem.
When we were visiting family last year we got into my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's hot tub most nights. It was so soothing and relaxing. I would get in every day if I had one! I'm looking into Far Infrared products. I attended a webinar earlier in the week and would like to go down and visit in person to look at the products. I've read that heat is an enemy of cancer cells.

Tracey,
I say enjoy. However If you’ve had a mastectomy I was warned it could cause lymphedema. I take hot baths also and I did get in a hot tub on vacation this year with no issues.

Hi
Just after I got diagnosed with MBC back in May 2018, I purchased a hot tub. I’ve used it most days - it’s the best thing I’ve ever ever owned.
I’m the only one who uses my hot tub and I always shower before and after use. I tend to have the jets on a gentle cycle.
I can’t imagine life without my hot tub ... I absolutely love it ...

Oh, gosh, Kiera, what on earth is the doc's objection?!? I think it sounds wonderful!!
Is s/he worried about...infection? I'm sure you'll keep it sanitary!
I'm actually thinking that if you crank up the heat it might be good for you/cancer fighting? Kind of like an FIR sauna or pad, heat up that core, weaken some cancer cells? Probably not true, but that's no reason not to use it as justification!
I'm happy that you'll be able to enjoy it starting this weekend! Maybe put a potted palm next to it, whip up some pina coladas, and stream some Jimmy Buffett! Feels like a vacation every day!
Enjoy!
Lynn
Yes she is worried about infection but when I said it would be just me and my partner and will keep it really clean she was ok
Maybe your oncologist is concerned about hand foot syndrome, which is a side effect of Xeloda. One of the ways of managing hand foot syndrome is to avoid soaking hands and feet in hot water.
Hand and foot syndrome is also a side effect of Doxil.
I’ve read that it’s best to avoid very hot water when taking it.
My brother has a hot tub. You just have to keep up with all the chemicals for hygeine. And replace water regularly. Hope you enjoy it!
Ohhh, I am so happy for you and also a teeny bit jealous. Hot tubs can spell ecstasy for me. Years ago, recovering from a serious back injury, we drove to a lovely out-of-town hotel just to savor their hot tub. It was small and no more than two allowed in at a time. No one told us to limit our time and we had no thought about health concerns..young and seeking pain relief. We stayed in too long on one occasion and became dehydrated so learned a valuable lesson. The pain relief was terrific and we made more than one trip but knew to limit our time thereafter.
My daughter and family rented a family vacation home this summer for a brief getaway and she sent photos of the two grands frolicking in the large outdoor hot tub with Colorado mountains in the background. Sheer heaven!
So many happy times ahead for you in yours! When travel becomes possible, I'll send my address for an invite, ok???
Yeah would be great to see you
We had a hot tub for years and I enjoyed it often. At that point I had had a mastectomy. Later due to a recurrence, I had further radiation . It was after that that I would have issues with lymphedema if I did the hot tub too often. Just stay aware of how your arm is feeling if that becomes an issue. If not -- enjoy !!
Hi lovely.
Such a nice thing to have. I was always under the impression that if you had heart or circulation problems they weren’t a good idea.
My stepdaughter actually had a problem as her Mum didn’t get the balance of the chemicals right and she finished up with some kind of infection that brought up lumps under her arms etc. Don’t panic, she was given antibiotics and was fine. I think they were just a little lapsidaisycle in cleaning. I have other family members that have hot tubs and love them and haven’t had a problem at all.
I guess one of the reasons your Oncologist doesn’t think it’s a good idea is because of infection.
You go for it........I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy it and it will help you relax. Let’s look on the positive side of it.
Have a good bubbly, relaxing weekend.
Cheryl
Thank you
When I had chemo the first time they told me the same thing....but I think that MacroMom’s advice is good!
We’ve had a hot tub for a couple years and I’ve had my teenage daughter and her friends in it and I’m fine. Just take care of it and it should be good.
I also think it is a good idea. Maybe your ONC is concerned about the chemicals that go into the hot tub. So maybe shower after you are in the hot tub. I think the heat is healing. In Japan they use very hot baths to keep healthy. Naturopaths also use some kind of method (I cannot remember the name) that heats the body up. They use this to help heal cancer patients. So enjoy your hot tub. Hugs Marlene
Went in it today it was lovely x
