Does anyone feel like pomegranate juice is helping there cancer? Does it make you feel better? If so how much do you have to drink a day.

My friend is telling me it will help me. But I thought I read not to drink if you are having chemo.

There are many fruits that can help you. Pomegranates being only one of them. Apples are very good for breast cancer. But getting little pieces of nutrition advice won’t help you as much as learning what a whole food plant diet can do. There is a book How Not to Die by Michael Greger MD. It is excellent and will give you the science behind what you are eating. I am going to see if I can take a photo of one of his excerpts well that didn’t work so here is the

Excerpt:

The cancer protection apples appear to offer is assumed to arise from their antioxidant properties. Apple antioxidants are concentrated in the peel which makes sense. The skin is the fruits first line of defense against the outside world Expose the inner flesh and it starts to oxidize within minutes. The antioxidant power of the peel may be between 2 times ( Golden Delicious) to 6 times Indarred greater than the pulp.

When Researchers at Cornel University separately dipped extracts of peel and flesh from the same apples on cancer cells the peel stopped cancer growth ten times more effectively “

I decided that if I wanted to live I would have to change everything I used to do. Because the way I ate and what I ate made a big contribution to where I am now. I was lucky to meet a woman Deby Jizi who told me about the whole plant diet I read everything I could on it because I knew if I didn’t know why I shouldn’t eat meat, I would never stop. So as I said before. Don’t just listen to one or two recommendations but empower yourself with as much knowledge as you can. Debyjizi has a web site with a list of the books I read. You can find it at debyjizi.com under resources. We are fighting for our life and if our oncologist didn’t take any nutrition classes and doesn’t keep up with the research then we have to do it for ourselves. Now aren’t you sorry you asked about Pomegranates? LOL

Yes, I had nine treatments. But food taste so bad I would gag. Lost 19 lbs. 'I was in Bed for 2 days vomiting and diarrhea had to go to hospital for fluids. Canceled last chemo. Have appointment with oncologist to see next step. Last tumor markers were in 3 and a400 range. So she will do markers. If they need a few more chemo to go in remission I will do it.After 4 weeks food taste coming back.

Hope food is Good by Sunday. Want to go out for birthday and enjoy it before starting chemo again.it.

Why not try making it to tea with Tumeric root, ginger root, and cinnamon sticks. It’s a great immune booster and taste good. Do it with a boiling water and let it steep for a while. I prefer to make mine in cups individually as opposed to a pot I think it taste better .

Use the root not the Tumeric powder

Thank you I will try that. Really need a boost in my immune system.

Hi Jersey-

No pomegranate juice if you're still on Ibrance.

Every birthday is a reason to celebrate!!! Have fun!

I would check with a pharmacist or your onc. I only know that it is not good with Ibrance.

Keep in mind that Pfzier states that no pomegrate while on Ibrance.

No pomegranate when taking Ibrance

No Grapefruit or Pomegranate on ibrance per Pfizer the manufacturer as it increases toxicity of Ibrance meaning it increases the level of Med in your system almost like if your on 125 mg/day (safe dose)—then the Grapefruit and/or Pomegranate will increase that dose in your body which is very dangerous on so many levels! Please talk with pharmacist and/or Oncologist for better explanation & (not yelling; using all Capitol letters just for emphasis) PLEASE DO NOT EAT or DRINK EITHER ONE! VERY SCARY/DANGEROUS SITUATION to my knowledge!

I am staying away from pomegranate. Thank you did not know it effects the meds. And who knows if it effects other meds besides Ibrance?

My friends think they are helping me by articles they read. But I trust this site because someone may have experience ed it first hand.

Hi Barbara,

I know that when friends give me an article or suggest something new I have to research it, mention it to my pharmacist, GP or oncologist and only then will I implement it if it's safe and I feel it is in my best interests to do so. A friend was telling me about trying CoQ₁₀ recently, but I won't take it as I was already reading up on it and how it would not be suitable for me. If I want to add something new I check for interactions with my current medications. Then you will be in a better position to decide what you should do and whether you should drink pomegranate juice or not.

It sounds like your friends are well meaning, but I would say that it is best to be cautious. Unless they are in the medical profession (and even then they should exercise caution) I think friends should respect your decisions and how you want to seek medical advice first.

Take care,

Sophie

Thanks Sophie,

I feel the same way. When friends read of something they want me to try it. Then I feel guilty because I really don't think it will work. I trust my doctor.

Right now I just want to get through chemo and start getting my energy back.what I would give for food to taste the way it should. It is so hard forcing yourself to eat something that does not taste good.

Well had my markers done today hope they are going down.

I seem to have a bladder problem now. Will have kidney ultrasound next week. Hope it is something simple.

Barbara

in reply toJerseygirl45

Hi Barbara,

I hope you get through chemotherapy successfully and that your energy levels soon return. I'm sorry to hear that food doesn't taste good at the moment. I was having a look at a Macmillan cookbook a while ago (Macmillan is a cancer charity here in England) that deals with different eating issues during cancer treatment. If you are interested in the book, you can go to this site and download a free copy:

be.macmillan.org.uk/be/p-22...

The book deals with how you can overcome issues by adapting certain recipes to meet your needs.

All the best with your ultrasound next week.

Take care,

Sophie

I heard great things about pomegranate juice as well. When I was first diagnosed, I absolutely craved grapefruit! I drank a lot of Pom juice and grapefruit however, had to discontinue after beginning treatment on Ibrance. Since then I have adopted a plant based diet... took me over a year to transition.....I am a pasta lover....but feel so much better now. Supplements are helping as well. It is good to hear from you Jerseygirl!

Thank you everyone for your help. I am no longer on Ibrance, I am on Taxol chemo. But I think I will stay away from pomegranate juice just to be sure.

I am on Ibrance and made the mistake of taking Pomegranate juice during my first course. I was so ill, all the literature said no grapefruit. The oncologist told me at my next appt it would have doubled the effect of the drug and really upset my liver and not to touch it.

Recently in error as it was previously a go to fruit for me, I was in a restaurant and ordered their superfood salad. I blissfully ate it including the pomegranate seeds!. Too busy chatting and enjoying friends company and a glass of Rose, an hour I was agony with a painful tummy and sick.

I usually have the constitution of an ox!

Please do look it up.

Best wishes

Gigi

Thank you for the info. I am staying away from pomegranate for sure.

I feel so bad for you having to go through that. We try so hard to do what we can to help us with this cancer, eat healthy and look what happens.

Hope you feel better.

Hello 🌺 I have read that pomegranate can interfere with some medicines as well as grapefruit. Please ask your doctor as soon as possible.

You're welcome, Sandra. I hope you like the book. There are a variety of recipes to choose from. I'm currently reading Dr Greger's How not to die cookbook. Why can I never say that without smiling?!

Sophie

I'll have to look it up, but I think it was mentioned in Jane McClelland's book. I can't remember off the top of my head.

Sophie

I'll have to look it up and get back to you. I've probably made notes about it. There is no index in the book.

Sophie

Hi Sandra,

I just looked up CoQ₁₀ and I read that if you're on a statin (off-label, not if you actually have high cholesterol) to not take that as well, as it blocks the same pathway. I'm taking atorvastatin as part of the COC protocol, so that's why I am not taking CoQ₁₀. I knew there was a reason behind it. I just couldn't remember! So if you're not taking a statin you will probably be fine.

Sophie

You're welcome, Sandra. I have learned a lot since this all kicked off (my diagnosis, that is).
