Is anyone taking Berberine? If so how much? I read the book How to Starve Cancer by Jane McLelland and want to incorporate some of the supplements she has recommended. The other supplement I am interested in is Maitake-D-Mushroom.

Hi
I read that book..I even took berberine for a while
However my tumour markers have been rising and when I told my oncologist..she told me to stop biotin as that can affect markers..she’d never heard of berberine so told me not to take that either
She also said that these off label drugs are not proven to work and often to obtain them you have to pay a high fee to a practitioner..if they were so good then we would be getting them now.. I think some of these clinics make a lot of money from people like us who are desperate
A lot of patients are taking the off label drugs together with their standard treatment and attributing any success to the off label drugs when there’s no way to prove which drug is the successful one
She did say I can take aspirin COD liver oil and glucosamine/chondroitin
My opinion

Let me preface this with the fact that I take a ton of vitamins. I am a huge believer in mushrooms but with all suppliments, you need to be careful what ingredients are in them and how reputable the manufactor is as well. All mushrooms are great for you and cancer fighters if you saute with extra virgin olive oil, onions and fresh garlic. I buy mine from a farmers market. My favorite in flavor are maitaki, shitake but I like them all. I also like the trumpet which are strong for the immune system.
I am! I take a pill that has 400mg with 100mg alpha lipoic acid twice a day. I’ve been taking it for almost 2 years. I’ve had no negative side effects.
The one I take has no biotin.
For what it's worth, I avoid all cancer-related supplements. In various arenas, I've read about probably 10 kinds of supplements than supposedly can help with cancer. How can one possibly know which ones to take? Do you take them all? How to you choose which one (or 2 or 3) to take? I think it can be dangerous. You can never know what might react with the real meds you're taking.
I agree
I learnt my lesson with the biotin scenario
Anything worth having would be prescribed by our oncologist
I’m not talking about fish oils or vitamins or even aspirin but the stuff on the internet that has not been proven to have any effect yet people will swear it has done..maybe coincidence that’s all

Hi!
I take several supplements...I usually keep to the big guns when it comes to supplement advise...The Truth About Cancer and the Annie Appleseed Project...I’ve found that these guys have been around awhile and are backed by doctors and other researchers...because yea I’ve gotten other emails especially at the beginning that made me wonder 🤷♀️My Onc told me what I’m doing is working as far as exercise and supplements so keep doing it as long as it works...😀
Check supplements on Sloan Kettering website. A ton of great info and research on individual supplements there
I have been NED fir a year now. Although I do not attribute this to any particular thing I’m doing or taking but I think it all works together to try and keep me healthy
Hi Mimigram. I was stage III breast in 2013, now suddenly
breakless with lung fluid and just diagnosed with stage IV
carcinoma of lung and chest lymph,so...... will be just starting
on 25 mg Letrozole, but I am interested in supplements because,
as I told my Oncologist, we know the limits of Letrozole, but
the results from alternatives is untested hence vague and provides
me, therefore, hope for a miracle. I am on Carnivora (just starting)
and about to start graviola (did take it awhile, during my 5 and a
half year vacation from chemo, as I refused Letrozole initially
in 2013); also take fermented tumeric with fermented black pepper,
and am about to try flaxseed oil with cottage cheese . Has anybody
tried any of these supplements? I am 81 and need to live another
year or two in order to put my affairs in order. This stage IV diagnosis
has been quite a wake up call, understandably. Haven't tried Berberine
yet. Welcome all comments on these supplements. especially the
Carnivora.
Be careful of flax seed if you are HER positive as it contains lignans which possibly are harmful.
Mimi
Hi Mimi,
I used to eat flaxseeds before my diagnosis, but threw out what I had left after I found out about the disease. I am ER+ HER2-. I am not sure if it interacts or not, but I didn't want to take that chance.
Sophie
Thanks, Sandra. That's reassuring to know. I should have run it by my pharmacists too. Two hospital pharmacists told me to steer clear of soya, whereas my oncologist couldn't tell me either way. So for drug interactions I tend to trust pharmacists.
