Hi! I want to share what I found very helpful to lessen skin irritation during radiation treatments. I'm not getting any compensation for this recommendation, just trying to helpful share information that is not widely known in the US.
I recently completed 30 radiation treatments and my skin, which is super sensitive, held up really well. I used Mepitel Film, made by Molnlycke. I found out about it about 1 week before treatment started and did research on it, there are several studies on it and it has been found to reduce radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. It can reduce moist desquamation (blistering and weeping of the skin) by about 80%, which is what I was hoping for but it exceeded my expectations! My doctor was not familiar with it but was ok with me using it.
I had a bilateral mastectomy and did not do radiation after but I had a regional recurrence so chose to do it after surgery this time. You put the film on the area to be radiated and leave it on though out treatment. I used 5 sheets of 10x25cm film to cover the treatment area, you can cut the film if needed. The film is waterproof but you should cover it with a hand towel when you shower. Some pieces will start to roll up over time so you trim them and patch with another piece if needed. I had to replace the film in my armpit area and on my collar bone a few times because they are the areas that move the most. Due to the motion there were some gaps in the film that I didn't notice during treatment so the radiation was directly on my skin. These areas got quite red and started to blister but I removed the film, applied cream and left the film off over the weekend when I wasn't getting treatment. The blistering stopped and the redness lessened by the time I replaced the film to these areas. The cream I used is called Recovery Skin Relief Radiation & Chemotherapy, made by a company called NovaGenesis and was created by a breast cancer survivor and her husband. Here is the website: recoveryskinrelief.com
After your final treatment you remove all the film and replace it, leaving it on for 2 weeks. Except for the short time my armpit area was exposed my skin was never painful. It did get slightly red but, again I have very fair and super sensitive skin. I used the Recovery Skin Relief cream after the film was removed. The radiation techs and nurses thought my skin was holding up amazingly well.
The Mayo Clinic uses Mepitel Film and sells it in the Mayo Clinic Store, you can order it online and have it delivered to you by mail. It is pricey - I paid $17 a sheet through the Mayo Clinic Store and another $25 to have it overnighted to me. I then found a store in Canada you can order it from homehealthstore.ca. I paid $67 for a package of ten 10x25cm. The price includes $19 for shipping. It takes over a week to get it from Canada so you need to order well in advance. Amazon sells Mepitel One made by the same company but it is not for use during RT. You need to get Mepitel Film.
There is a YouTube video from Molnlycke on how to apply the film. The video instructs you to put the film vertically from your collar bone down, which I did at first. When I replaced it halfway through treatment (not required, I just wanted to change it) I put it horizontally and was able to use less sheets. Your skin can get itchy from the film but it wasn't too bad.
I had to spend a lot of time finding this information through various channels so I hope that this information is useful for those of you who will be doing radiation.
