Good morning ! I had the metaport inserted already, but haven't started chemo. Doctor said I'll probably just need surgery where cancer is located and the lymph node as well. Confused 🤔

Good morning Bubba_6 ! Are you confused about why you'll need surgery on your lymph node?

Well only that the doctor told me it would be my lymph node and only part of the breast where the cancer is .which is good news,it didn't spread anywhere else

Good news about probably just needing surgery. Are you confused about why they put in the metaport? It sounds like they expect you to have chemo as well if they put in a metaport.

I just had my port taken out after completing my chemo. I was very thankful for the port as I have awful veins. They can take blood samples, give chemo and I had a blood transfusion through it. It was a God send for sure.

So, it sounds like everything is going according to plan. I was confused about your confusion! Your mode of treatment makes sense. I know being diagnosed is a very confusing time. (I'm almost 4 years post-diagnosis.) If you have any specific questions about people's experiences, I'm sure your breast cancer sisters can answer them here. The best of luck to you.

Good evening! I have a question. Why would they do a mugascan to make sure i can have chemo. Wouldn't that have been fone prior to the metaport.

They may be checking to make sure you can take certain drugs. Not all chemo affects your heart.

Not sure. Maybe something came up after they put in the port to make them need to confirm whether your heart could tolerate chemo. For questions like this, it's best to ask your doctor.

Your doctor is the only person who can answer this question definitively. But often an initial Muga test is given before treatment begins in order to establish a baseline to compare future Mugas against. That way your doctor will be able to tell if your heart function changes in the course of treatment. If it does, she can decide whether the drugs or dosages need to be adjusted. Good luck!
