Rectal bleeding and Gabapentin?

Has anyone suffered from rectal bleeding while taking Gabapentin? I am taking 2x100mg tablets three times per day and they are doing nothing for my RLS but I am running out of alternatives as suffered augmentation on both pramipexole and ropinarole plus side effects of insatiable appetite and compulsive shopping habit. Cant say i have heard anyone who has experienced your problem. when taking Gabapentin. The dose you are taking is only 600mg all together, that is a low dose, and probably why it isnt helping your RLS.

I tried Gabapentin a long time ago, first on 300mg then 600mg, neither dose helped my RLS, but just made me very sleepy in the day, tried for a month, hoping, either it would work, or the daytime drowsiness would go, as neither did, i came off it.

I would see your doctor and tell him/her about what is happening.

Have you tried any of the pain killers for your RLS...??

Hello and festive greetings to you. I have no medical expert knowledge but I honestly don't think gabapentin can cause bleeding from the rectum and the dose you are taking is very low. You neeec to see your doctor about this and I wouldn't delay. Sounds like the dopamine agonists like ropinerole etc are not for you. Is the RLS painfal as taking gabapentin suggests it might be? I have bad pain with my RLS and for that reason I take 20mg of oxycontin am and pm and 100mg of tramadol am and pm. I take 12mg of clonazepam am and 2mg pm for faciculations and it helps a bit with the sensory disturbance. I still have some pain but it is much reduced and I am taking pregabalin, which is a stronger version of gabapentin. Really for the first time in 11 years my RLS is better controlled than it has ever been. The insomnia though isn't and the sensory symptoms are a problem for me. I know someone who took ropinerole for parkinsons and kept spending. Gambling is actually on the patient information leaflet. I came off gabapentin as it didn't seem to be helping me but perhaps you might benefit from a higher dose. Let us know how you get on.

Sorry thr above should read 2mg of clonazepam not 12!

Gabapentin did not cause bleeding for me.

It caused weight gain (weight that didn't come off easily)

I was tired like I had a hang-over constantly

Some numbness in my feet happened.

Could be Fischer or a hemorrhoid? Likely if the bleeding is

bright red.

If the blood is black and tar like, could be trouble! (Hope NOT)

Augmentation is an issue for me right now. Darn it!!! = /

Pain Killers are a Godsend when I am in agony!

Well Wishes, Happy Holidays! =)

That is not a side effect of Gabapentin, as far as I can remember in my reading and experience. so, I would get it checked out as SOON as possible. Requip and Mirpaex wil definitely do that appetite thing and lots of people develop "compulsive behaviors" on those dopamine agonists. Gabapentin may have you gaining weight, as that is a common side effect, but NOT rectal bleeding. Better call your doctor if it is still going on, though. SERIOUSLY. HOpe you had a Merry Christmas! :)

mmm.. have recently started with Gaberpentin.. 400mg rising ... as well as Ropinirole patches 300mg .. little help for RLS but i will monitor blood discharge as I have had a little.. but not sure if this is the cause or long standing haemorrhoids

Hi, I looked at the side effects and it doesn't list anything about bleeding, however, do You have hemorroids? I have hemorroids and the medicine i take cymbalta and that irritates my hemorroids and I have rectal bleeding because of it..

Actually 'unusual bleeding' IS a side effect of gabapentin. Maybe it wasn't listed on the site you looked on when you posted this comment but it probably is now.

Hi Ellsbells

I take 900mg of gabapentin (300 x 3) per day, not for RLS, but epilepsy and I've had unexplained bleeding for nearly a year now. My doctor has tried pretty much everything also and this drug has worked well for about 5 years and I'm nearly having normal brainwaves (which would mean I can drive) but was forced to go on the pill and have an anti pregnancy thing put in too. It stops the bleeding most of the time but I'm going to keep pushing to be put on something else. (Oh not rectal bleeding by the way) If you haven't might be worth asking for something else, if you have I hope it's working and that this helps someone else.

Thanks for your interesting reply. I stoped gabapentin and the bleeding stoped so I guessed it was a side effect of the drug . At the time I could not find any data that gabapentin caused bleeding but years later when not feverishly searching found out that rectal haemorrhage is a side effect. I am one of those people who is hypersensitive to drugs as the neurologist ,who I eventually saw after seven years of working my way through the list of approved RLS drug, told me. The neurologist prescribed dihydrocodeine for me a medicine I knew, almost from the outset , was the one that worked for me.

That's great to hear. I'm going to keep looking into alternatives for it. Sometimes even a brand switch can help. For example I also take Inderal which is pretty much the same as another drug but I react to one & not the other. Glad you're doing better.

I too have rectal bleeding from Gabapentin! The more I take the more I bleed! Needed an iron infusion because of it! I too have hemorrhoids & I think the combo is what causes it! As if I need anything else going on in my life!

Sorry to read of your problems with gabapentin. I stopped taking them soon after rectal haemorrhage began and the bleeding stopped. I did report the bleeding and cessation of bleeding to my GP but he said it was just coincidence. There again, every side effect from prescription medicine that goes away after stopping the treatment is always just a coincidence. Hope your blood infusion works, a friend had one recently for anaemia and has more energy than she has had in years.

Almost 10 years old post, but yes, after 7 months of taking 2-8 300mg gaba daily, I too have (worsened) hemorrhoids, and unexplained rectal bleeding ONLY when I take gabapentin

I know this is an old post but same issue @ 400mg 3x daily for a couple of months now. Also experiencing extreme swelling of legs & feet. Discontinuing & contacting doctor first thing tomorrow morning.

As I have previously written no gabapentin equalled no rectal bleeding. I could not have continued with it for long as bleeding was horrendous . Hope your problem resolves by stopping drug but always best to get any abnormal bleeding checked by a doctor. Good luck.
