Am I the only one who reacts so dramatically to antihistamines CREAM ?

Hi I posted some time ago how I used antihistamine cream and my legs went into overdrive but thought, although I doubted it ,that it could be coincidence. Well today I had to use it again as an itchy rash was getting worse and I used the cream last around 6 o'clock.

My RLS has been going nuts since 7.30,no let up and very severe in my arms too. This is very usual for me these days, it I do get symptoms they are mild and soon walked off so I am now 99% sure this is due to the antihistamine

It is Boots own brand and the active ingredient is Mepyramine Maleate.

Strangely I can take non sedating Antihistamines orally without any problems.

Has anyone else reacted to antihistamine in cream form? I find it a bit odd .It's 4 in the morning and my RLS is on par with my bad old days of augmentation ,I can't even sit for 20 seconds- all from a cream ?

Thanks Pipps

So after searching it see.s that mepyramine is a 1st generation antihistamine Does anyone know of an antihistamine CREAM that contains a 2nd generation antihistamine?

Hi Pippins2 - For many years I have had bad itching of my skin. It can be extreme and believe it or not is caused by ordinary water. When it is bad I cannot shower or bathe but have to use wipes to cleanse skin. I have tried different anti-itch creams but the best for me is Lanacane. You can get this on Amazon or in a pharmacy. The mepyramine you mention seems to be a sedating antihistamine and even used in the cream it can make you drowsy. I looked this up on the internet.

I hope you get relief very soon. Itching can be very upsetting when it goes on and on and affects sleep, etc.

Good Wishes

I react to certain antihistamines too. Phenergan tablets give me the worst restless legs. I've recently discovered the are dopamine antagonists.

If you need an antihistamine, the following are safe for RLS: OTC Claritin (loratadine, Clarityn), zyrtec (Cetirizine ), or allegra (Fexofenadine, Telfast ).

Thanks. It seems the sleepy ones are the issue.

In any case it’s not advisable for anyone to use antihistamines as a topical cream as you could develop an allergy to all forms of antihistamine via any route.

Yep, there are tons of histamine receptors in the feet. I have had horrible reactions from all sorts of creams that all have had antihistaminic properties, even herbal ones with nettles and burdock. Rose scented body lotion has been ok, I also use rose fragrance otherwise.
