Clonidine - success with RLS anyone?

Evening team

I have a query. As some of you may remember I was prescribed Buprenorphine two years ago by a neurologist for my restless limbs.

I have a feeling I may have asked this question before, maybe not in one of my posts, (can't remember!)

Does anyone out there take Clonidine for RLS? if so is it successful? any side effects? What dose do you take and how long have you taken it for?

Many thanks and sending hope to all.

Jane :)

I take . 2mg alongside oxycontin but it is for anxiety/sleep not RLS. My side effects are dry mouth and grogginess which is welcomed.

Thanks for getting back ziggypiggy, it is good for anxiety, I remember, but although it made me tired, I still felt wired with it. My dose was 2 x 0.25 mcgs 3 x daily. Is 1 mg the same as 4 x .25 mcgs?

If you don't mind me asking do you spread your dose through the day and have you been taking it for long?

Yes. 4x .25mg equals 1mg. I used to take a dose during the day as well as at night but it made me too groggy. It works well for anxiety but not so much panic attacks. If your wired but not anxious it could tend toward an ADHD situation where lack of focus and concentration get involved.

Ziggy, i'm feeling a bit 'foggy' not really understanding .... do you mean the Clonidine could cause ADHD or that me being wired, (meaning thoughts constant, unrelenting) when trying to sleep :(

Not the clonidine. I thought you were referring to your being "wired" normally. Constant worrying at night can be caused by numerous psychiatric conditions. For myself it is an underlying personality disorder that fires up my inner critic. Like you mentioned it can be unrelenting and exhausting.

Take care.

Ah .. maybe 0.50 at night was too low a dose and thay's why I couldn't sleep with it. I have a lack of focus and concentration but I put it down to CfS/ME. But then I've poor Mental health most of my life. Much better now. It's just the constant reacurring negative thoughts.

Trauma related but trying journelling. Finding it Amazing. A little off topic but have you heard of Julia Cameron?

ziggypiggy, I don't know if you have tried or can get but I find Clonazepan effective for panic attacks :)

Good :)

I have used clonidine but only at a very low dose. It is amazing as a sleep aid. I wasn't taking enough to assess its impact on RLS/PLMD. It seems you have to take a fairly high dose for the purposes of RLS.

My son takes it nightly. It helps him get to sleep, and possibly improves his focus. He has ADHD as well as PLMD.

I found that it caused unbearably dry eyes and also some dizziness, but i was also taking 300mg pregabalin at the time and it was likely the compound effect.

Thanks AmrobIf you don't mind me asking, what dose does your son take at night?

Also, if he had side effects, did they dissapate?

I am desperate for sleep. Have 2 mgs of Clonazepan but dosn't work for long sleepwise

Great for anxiety though.

Not at all. He takes 100mcg (0.1mg). Because he's still quite young, he can't articulate side effects very well except it made him very sleepy to begin with.I do recall reading that for clonidine to work for RLS, it needs to be at a dose higher than is typically prescribed.

Between you and I and ziggy and the gatepost! I can report that 1mg of Clonidine worked for my RLS last night and no Bupreborphine!I found an old pack in the cupbourd that I was asked to trial before I could be prescribed Buprenorphine.

Thing is very groggy.

I would like to switch to Clonidine, (if it carries on working and the side effects ease) and yet I feel reluctant to relingquish my hard fought for Buprenprphine in case the Clonidine proves tricky and I can't get the Buprenorphine back.

The only issues with Buprenirphine, (for me) is that it takes my appitite away, and it enlivens, so affecting sleep.

Not what you're looking for?
