The Therapulse and more

Hi everyone thought it was time to give an update on my use of the Therapulse. It is helpful have to use it as soon as i feel any sensation in my leg. Still taking meds but if i get breakthrough as i can’t increase meds because if my low tolerance to them. So once i put the therapulse on i get back to sleep. Still not bought another one yet i really need two so one is charging. Also had my ferritin level tested that was strange as i was expecting a full blood panel done and the separate ferritin one done but the doctor only ordered for the ferritin one so the result for ferritin was 108. and told no action required

Thanks for the update.Good news on the ferritin.

Since it is just barely over 100, you might still want to increase it as some people find it takes a ferritin level of 200 to 300 to help. Take 325 mg of ferrous sulfate or 25 mg of iron bisglycinate with 100 mg of vitamin C or some orange juice since that helps its absorption. Ferrous sulfate is fine for most people, but if you have problems with constipation, iron bisglycinate is better. Take it every other day, preferably at night at least 1 hour before a meal or coffee or tea and at least 2 hours after a meal or coffee or tea since iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach and the tannins in coffee and tea limit absorption. If you take magnesium, calcium or zinc, even in a multivitamin take them at least 2 hours apart since they interfere with the absorption of iron. Also antacids interfere with its absorption so should be taken at least 4 hours before the iron or at least 2 hours after. Don't take your iron tablets before or after exercise since inflammation peaks after a workout, don't take tumeric as it can interfere with the absorption of iron or at least take it in the morning if you take your iron at night. If you take thyroid medicine don't take it within 4 hours. It takes several months for the iron tablets to slowly raise your ferritin. Ask for a new blood test after 3 months.

Sue is it possible to raise the ferritin taking iron supplements with a level of 108. ?

Elisse, that depends on the person. It would have been good to have a full iron panel, as especially the iron (transferrin) saturation is a good indicator as to whether it is safe to continue to take iron. But in the way people here generally recommend taking it, once a day or once every other day, the risk of getting too much iron should be low. I think you are experienced enough 😉 to decide.

The therapulse sounds like good news. I find I have become less tolerant to breakthrough symptoms than when I was when the RLS was still hardly controlled by the medicines I took at the time. Having a non-pharmaceutic additional treatment available sounds wise. And I am glad it seems to work well enough. What keeps you from buying another one?

in reply to LotteM

My thinking right or wrong is taking iron supplements now i doubt it would send my ferritin level sky high. I need to talk to the doctor who ordered the blood test but got a feeling he was only a locum meaning brought in when there was a staff shortage, we seem to have had a few of them. Unfortunately money is a bit tight right now but will eventually get another Therapulse

I hope the Therapulse will continue to work for you, Elisse, and that you'll soon be able to get a second one. Consider second hand?

Absolutely.

I raised my ferritin from low 100's to over 200 with oral iron bisglycinate (gentle iron). 107 would be much too low for me.

That’s my intention to get it up to 200+. It’s not anyways successful to help when you have Primary RLS. But i am willing to give it a go.

My son bought me the Revite pulse machine as it is quite expensive but its been worth it's weight in gold over the last year whilst suffering horrendous RL most nights.I set it up before going to bed so that when I stumble downstairs having been woken up ( if managed to get to sleep in the 1st place!)& use the machine for about half hr it really really helps & usually can go back to bed for a uninterrupted few hours sleep.

I also have Epsom salts footpath as cold as possible to ease the burning feet that usually kicks in as well.

I am not on any prescribed medication & just take magnesium & iron supplements & get information from as many RL forums as possible as there is so little research being done to help us sufferers...so keep on posting any suggestions 🙏

My RLS is currently dormant. I feel that the Therapulse played a part in this and was quite effective. I am only using it now if the RLS threatens to kick back in. However, 2 interesting anecdotal points ( noting that the manufacturer says it is only designed for RLS and other designs are available for other conditions/ areas).1. Woke up middle of night in pain from tight glutes. Held the Therapulse against it for 5-10 minutes, pain subsided, back to sleep. Now happened a couple of times, great result every time.

2. Woke up middle of night feeling early RLS onset, used Therapulse on legs, but could also feel RLS spreading to hands and arms. Took Therapulse off leg and held in hands. Things seemed to settle but before I got back to sleep, say half an hour later, went into paroxysmal AF, which lasted another 24 hours. Maybe coincidence but not one I will risk again. Definitely suspect the "off-piste" vibrations scrambled the electrical impulses to my heart and off we go with AF. Trial and error.

Hi Hidden, a couple of years ago I discovered Therapulse after much research and I got in touch with our Chairman, Julian Spinks, and he was going to put my article in the RLS magazine. However Lockdown came & Julian had other things to say, quite naturally,so my therapulse article did not get published.

So I am delighted you are using it & it works for you.

As I said a few months ago on this forum I definitely needed 2, one on each leg, plus my Meds.

Hope it continues to work.

Hi there

Glad to hear that the therapulse machine is working for you. I bought 2 therapulse machines some months ago but since starting gabapentin I haven’t needed to use them. If you want to private message me with ur address I’d be happy to send them to you. Otherwise they will probably stay in my drawer until I have a clear out and bin them at some point in the future. I would be happy to see them go to a good home where they will be appreciated.
