Omeprazole and RLS

I’ve had worsening RLS for a while and recently realised that my Omeprazole could be a causative factor- I take 10mg daily. I’ve been reading about long term effects of Omeprazole and learned that it can cause lowering of magnesium levels.

I’d like to try coming off Omeprazole but wonder how long I’d have to give it to see if there was any benefit.

What I’m wanting to ask is- is the lowered magnesium levels the mechanism of of Omeprazole causing RLS or is it something else? Presumably if it was the mechanism, stopping Omeprazole wouldn’t bring immediate relief until magnesium levels were restored.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Another poster has just stopped omeprazole and went on gaviscon. Immediate lessening of RLS.

You could follow/ enter that particular conversation.

I'll have a look for a contact.

I'm sure you can search for this. It is live at the moment.

I immediately stopped omeprazole and asked for gaviscon not as good but has made a difference.)

After increased RLS on Famotidine I switched to Omeprazole 40mg every morning. My RLS is much better on the Omeprazole. My GERD has affected my lungs so it must be controlled. My ferritin level is 116. I take a daily iron supplement in the afternoon with orange juice.

Omeprazole interferes with the absorption of minerals like magnesium and iron. You can take magnesium tablets such as magnesium glycinate which is what is usually recommended. Be sure you don't take any antacids within 2 hours of taking gabapentin.

I too used to take Omeprazole. It inhibits mineral absorption including of course iron. This is most likely to be affecting your RLS. Have you had your levels tested? And do you take a supplement? Eventually I stoped the Omeprazole and am now only using Gaviscon Advance.

Have you had tests, magnesium RBC B12 active, to see if Omeprazole is effecting the absorption of same?

Thank you all for your answers. My blood count is fine, nothing to indicate low B12, ferritin was 75 at last count so am taking iron and think I will try adding magnesium as I’d struggle stopping Omeprazole.

Be sure you don't take magnesium within 3 hours of taking gabapentin as it can reduce the absorption of the gabapentin. on he iron, you probably know all this, but just in case you don't: take your iron tables with 100 mg of vitamin C or some orange juice since that helps its absorption. Take it every other day preferably at night at least 1 hour before a meal or coffee or tea and at least 2 hours after a meal or coffee or tea since iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach and the tannins in coffee and tea limit absorption. Take magnesium, calcium or zinc at least 2 hours apart since they interfere with the absorption of iron. Don't take tumeric as it can interfere with the absorption of iron or at least take it in the morning if you take your iron at night. Also antacids interfere with the absorption so should be taken at least 4 hours before the iron or at least 2 hours after. If you take thyroid medicine don't take it within 4 hours. It takes several months for the iron tablets to slowly raise your ferritin. Ask for a new blood test after after 3 months.

Thank you Sue, still hunting for the magnesium glycinate so haven’t started it yet. I take iron alt days with vit C, usually in the morning with my coffee as that’s when I’m most likely to remember it! Plus my thyroxine! Think I’m going to have to sit down and work out a timing plan that is do-able. My ferritin has risen so the iron is getting in, but maybe slower than it could do. Can I take magnesium with morning thyroxine/Omeprazole? Thank you again for your advice.

You should be able to find the magnesium on Amazon. Scheduling everything does get complicated. The Omeprazole and magnesium should not be taken within 4 hours of thyroxine. You can take magnesium with Omeprazole.
