Hi. I have a severe problem with stomach acid/ reflux which is causing extensive problems. My doctor wants me to try omeprazole at least short term to see if it helps my symptoms. Everything else I have tried ( including gaviscon and H2blockers etc) has failed to help. I am aware that PPI'S such as omeprazole adversely affect RLS. But I'm not sure if they are an immediate trigger( like an anti- histamene is for example) or if it is because PPI'S inhibit iron absorption and so over time they exacerbate RLS. If anyone can share their experience with omeprazole I would be really grateful. X

RLS and omeprazole advice
Ask for Gaviscon which is not a PPI.
I stopped omeprazole after using for 10 years because it keeps you from absorbing certain minerals. However it seemed to make no difference to my rls. I limit gluten and dairy and that made a huge difference with heartburn and reflux. Also, I started on a probiotic and that too has helped. Omeprazole is super hard to wean off. My son has had good results using apple cider vinegar (with the mother)in water 2x per day. He said it took a few weeks but he has no sign of heartburn.
I had a rare but vicious attack of GERD last year, to the point where I couldn't even eat solid food. I bought a bottle of OTC omeprazole and took it according to label for ten days. It took care of my stomach/eso problems and did not exacerbate my RLS at all. If you don't take it long-term, I think you'll be fine.
After a single dose of Omeprazole I spent the entire night up walking and restless! I did not have the same response to Ranitidine though I’ve never taken it on a daily basis.
There is also another product: Gaviscom Advance, available in the UK. It's completely different than regular Gaviscom. My wife (in the US) imports it. She chooses it over omeprazole for GERD.
I was never tested for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) but I assumed I had it. GERD was so bad my teeth hurt from Acid! Herbal Remedy from SiboInfo - I used 4 drops of Oil of Oregano with Olive Oil (a carrier oil - don't use Oregano without a carrier oil!). Protocol is 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off. In addition I use Super Enzymes with HCL. HCL is MORE Acid and that sounds counterintuitive - but it is not! In addition - probiotics and fermented foods are a great benefit.
GERD and Acid Reflux has the biggest disconnect - mainstream medicine vs. holistic practitioners.

I tried omeprazole for my Gerd and my barretts esophagus but after 2 weeks my rls was so bad that I stopped. Same with H2 blockers. So my doctor prescribed sucralfate which just coats the stomach. Not ideal but using it before bed plus raising the head of the bed by placing bricks under the front legs of the bed frame has helped. Also I stop eating by 6 pm whenever possible.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Very helpful.
Jumpey, my wife, who is a long term omeprazole user, had a severe case of RLS with little success through her doctor. I learned a buildup of lactic acid from a deficiency of thiamine is associated with RLS. She takes a B complex along with magnesium so I searched into forms of thiamine. I found a form called Benfotiamine with high absorption offering higher levels in the blood than water soluble forms however other thiamine forms will also provide lactic acid clearing but I wanted to see what Benfotiamine could do. It worked for her. She has not had RLS in years. Be aware of the anti thiamine factors that diminish or destroy thiamine. Search on "stuttering anti thiamine factors" for a comprehensive list found in the stuttering forum. . Magnesium is needed to supply enzymes to activate thiamine. Like thiamine, loss of magnesium can result from pain, stress and caffeine. A list of others can be found searching on "krispin magnesium". Jumpey, you mentioned acid reflux . Do another search on "acid reflux thiamine" and "IBS thiamine". The brain gut axis requires activated thiamine for healthy function and unfortunately so many suffer because of a deficiency of activated thiamine. Please discuss this with your health care professional before using any supplement.
Kick milk to the curb. Meds not necessary.
I have read many good things about Zinc L Carnosine for gut related problems like gastritis, so may help GERD. Its A cure not a suppressant . You need at least 16mg a day maybe more depending on severity. It’s acts differently than other zinc. It’s worth researching. I hope it helps.
I can't help thinking that your digestive problems and rls probably stem from your diet. Relief from reflux can be found believe it or not cider vinegar (google it), In my opinion most rls stems from inflammation of the nerves most commonly due to eating the wrong foods. Mostly these are foods which raise insulin, especially processed food full of refined sugars and starches. Other causes of inflammation could be refined seed oils.
I took omeprazole and Protonics (both PPIs) and they didn’t bother my RLS. BUT, they also didn’t help my reflux. What did help was cimetidine but that is an H2 blocker. I was specifically taking it for swallowing problems which were so bad I truly couldn’t breathe and thought I was going to die!
Thanks for sharing.I know the feeling! So scary for you.I have breathing problems. Are you better now? And how long did you take the Cimetidine?
I’ve been taking the cimetidine since mid December. In November I had to call my internist in a sheer panic (while I was taking the omeprazole) because I really couldn’t swallow and he put me on prednisone. So I took the prednisone for 3 months and have tapered off to none this past week. I’m hoping and praying that the cimetidine works by itself. It’s been 4 days without the prednisone so far.
I have excessive acid and gaviscon etc make my RLS treatments less effective (Tramadol and Gabapentin). Have been on Lansoprazole for a few weeks and have no more acid problems and no discernible change to my RLS level. I track daily and score my RLS level against food/ stress/ activity/ medicines/ supplements in the hope that one day I will find my link!
I hope you will too! Thanks for your response. How long did it take for the Lansoprazole to work?
I'm so glad it's not exacerbating your RLS. It's worth keeping an eye on your iron levels because PPI'S and H2 blockers inhibit mineral absorption.
Within a week my acid had gone and I haven’t needed Rennies or Gaviscon since. I was taking Ferrous Bisglycinate at the time and my Ferritin level was still in the 70’s. Was hoping my GP would agree to an intravenous iron increase but he has given me a couple of months on twice daily Ferrous Sulphate. I can’t take it on an empty stomach but will see if I get an improvement after 2 months. Can’t really isolate the Lansoprazole effect on my Ferritin level whilst on these supplements. Good luck with your omeprazole.
