my husband is really getting down. He’s super tired and feels totally out of it. I believe it is because the kratom is no longer working. It helps the restlessness I guess, but he can’t sleep. We have an appointment with dr B in Downey but not until early June. We live in Asia, so we don’t have a lot of option for these things. Does anyone have any advice re: the kratom? And what to do once it is but working as well or causing insomnia?? I’m so upset as he’s had problems already With it in the past. But I don’t know what to do… Please any help or advice or suggestions… I’m starting to feel pretty desperate myself..
greatly appreciate any help or supports!!

Hello! Sorry to hear that your husband's having trouble with Kratom. My husband uses Kratom for RLS and he's having a similar issue. It seems to work for an hour but it's wearing off pretty quickly. Have you tried the different strains? Red strains tend to be good, although my husband's used Green Melay and Jungle Deep for quite a while and it seems to work well.
As youre in Asia I don't know if cannabis is accessible to you, but he also has it on prescription and vaping some in the eve seems to help him nod off to sleep.
I'm afraid that I have no personal experience of kratom, but I've seen suggestions in this forum that rotating kratom strains can help prevent kratom tolerance, as recommended in this article:
Can you get Delta 8 or 9 gummies there? They are legal in much of the US and available at all smoke shops. They are stronger than what you get at legal pot shops. If not, can you get the thc sleep gummies? Any of these, along with the kratom, should get him great sleep and through to his appt. And they would give you some sleep, too! If no to all, he might just have to smoke some pot or get a prescription for Ambien (if possible).
I have taken all of the above to get sleep, other than smoking pot. He may need to up his kratom dose-unless you can find another opioid substitute-as some people need to keep increasing it. Others seem to be fine on the same dose for years.
interesting you mention ambien, he got a prescription for zolpiden today but I don’t think he’s going to use it. It may trigger bipolar symptoms. Delta 8 cab work in states but we can’t get it here…. Thank you for the thoughts. If you know anything about zolpiden let me know.
I do take zolpidem here and there but I do not take a full 10 mg caplet. I take 1/3 or 1/2, at most. Sometimes I just take a tiny piece so I can fall back asleep. Especially since I am/was also taking kratom or an opioid.
I don't know about the bipolar affect but if he does use it, I would start with a small amount and see how that goes. I didn't know if you could get Delta 8 or 9 but I am sure you can get pot-you can get that anywhere. Good luck!
Kratom, although not an opioid, has been known to lose effectiveness over time due to an increase in tolerance. Low-dose methadone, on the other hand, seems to not have that problem, probably because of the relatively minute dosage required. Has he been increasing his dosage of kratom? Do you mind sharing length of months (years?) using, and how many grams per day?
he’s used it on and off for years. He’s been addicted to it. Sadly started using it again about 6 months ago. It’s because where we live, we have no alternative. Hence why we need to figure something out. He has a dependency on it physically anyways. Already been to rehab for it. He uses a couple of teaspoons around 3 times a day. I told him to change strains so I think he’s trying to do that. I have no idea what to advise. I would rather see him use cbd but he can’t get it here. Methadone isn’t an option either. It’s hard where we live. I’m really hoping we can get proper help in US from Dr B 🙏🏾❤️
Since you live in Asia, he won't be able to prescribe anything. Perhaps instead on flying all that way, you might want to contact him by phone. He is very good at giving advice that way. I can't find his phone number but if you ask it I'm sure someone will give it to you.
I've used kratom myself...I found that if you can get "full spectrum" cbd capsules to combine with the kratom, taking one or two in the evening before bed they can really assist in better sleep. Best of luck. I feel/share your husbands pain and distress. Also kratom rotation helps too. Take care
My personal experience of kratom for RLS is that you'll need to take tolerance breaks from time to time, coming off kratom will cause insomnia for a few days, then after a month it will work again as before.
Also don't increase the dose to try to get the previous effect to return as it won't work and you'll just get more side effects.
Hello RCHD. I’m so sorry that your husband is suffering so much and can sympathise as I’m going through the same at the moment withdrawing from Ropinirole. I have used Kratom red vein very occasionally but I took quite a large dose on two occasions in one day through desperation and it neither helped my RLS or sleep so won’t be taking it again. I’m sorry that this post isn’t very helpful but has anyone else noticed that Kratom no longer works for them.
Best wishes and hope you find relief somehow before your next appointment
Kratom is called an opioid by the experts, with good reason. It acts on opioid receptors.
Kratom and other opioids can cause adrenal fatigue, which could be the cause of your husband's symptoms. Ask your doctor to test all adrenal hormones, particularly testosterone and DHEA. After years, they could be severely depleted.
