Ferritin level 33

My ferritin level is at 33. Talked to my dr. She said I cannot get an iron infusion because insurance co. don't cover it for rls. She told me to increase iron and vit. C to twice a day. I can't imagine this will raise the ferritin level that much. What do you think?

The general advice would be to take fer bysglicinate ( gentle iron) once every two days, in the evening, on empty stomach, with vit c.This will bring up your ferritin very slowly.

Actually an iron infusion isn't recommended unless your ferritin is over 75 and less than 100 or your transferritin saturation percentage is less than 20%. Instead it is recommended to take 325 mg of ferrous sulfate with 100 mg of vitamin C or some orange juice since that helps its absorption. Take it every other day at least 1 hour before a meal or coffee and at least 2 hours after a meal or coffee since iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach and preferably at night. If you have problems with constipation switch to iron bisglycinate. If your ferritin is between 75 and 100 or if your transferrin saturation is below 20, you probably need an iron infusion since iron isn't absorbed as well above 75. If you take magnesium take it at least 2 hours apart since it interferes with its absorption. Don't take tumeric as it can interfere with the absorption of iron. It takes several months for the iron tablets or iron infusion to slowly raise your ferritin. Ask for a new blood test after 3 months. As mentioned it is normally recommended to take it once every other day, but you can try twice a day.

Hi SueIs this a new discovery regarding not to take turmeric as it interferes with iron absorbtion?

I have never heard this before.

I have been taking turmeric very successfully, for years, for arthritis pain.

My last ferritin was over 100 but I havnt got the exact figure to hand.

Thanks

No- it is not a new discovery except to me as I was researching something else. And everyone responds differently so obviously you don't need to worry about it.

100% you need to have an iron infusion! There’s a possibility it might not help you but soooo worth having a trial . Otherwise you are potentially wasting precious months/years of bad symptoms . ( possibly read this snd show the docs…RLS Karger doi.org/10.1159/000518911 )

I took iron bisglycinate every other day with vitamin C as people have advised above and raised my ferritin from 75 to 140 over a couple of months. I couldn’t get it any higher though.

Same with me - went from 49 to 105 in 3 months - Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate, daily - then every other day. BTW, many main stream breakfast cereals are "fortified" with iron. I looked at Cheerios the other day it had 25mg of added iron. So it might be an additional source for raising ferritin levels.
