Hi everyone,

I have had my blood test results. Please could anyone tell me if these results are ok for someone with rls -

Serum ferritin level (XE24r) 56ug/L [30.0 - 400.0]

Gobblededook! Receptionist says no further action required.

Thank you. LisaK

You have low normal ferritin - anything between 50 and 150 would be good.

However-(isn't there always one😂) for rls , it is recommended that the level be above 100- so you could go back to the dr and seek iron supplemtation.

Or take 25mg of fer bisglycinate (gentle iron ) with a glass of orange juice on empty stomach last thing at night.

You could do this for a couple of days - but inform your Dr and get retested to check where the ferritin level is going.

Good luck.

Hi Lisa,

As madlegs says, your serum ferritin is low for someone with RLS. Results will say NAD next to your result because for most people a level of 50 is acceptable. For those of us with RLS it should be 100-150. In the USA, Johns Hopkins University is doing studies on this and give iron infusions if levels are below 100. Doctors here are totally ignorant of the link between iron levels and RLS. A lot of people notice an improvement in RLS as serum ferritin levels rise.

As madlegs suggests, take iron bisglycinate and let your GP know.

Thank you for your reply. I will do as you suggest and make sure my GP is informed.

Yeah - that's low - mine was 49 - docs said "Normal - don't do anything". Iron bisglycinate 18 mg once a day took away severe symptoms in a week! It doesn't necessarily "cure" RLS - I still have Insomnia. My supplementation went on daily for months, then every other day, then twice a week. Now I don't take it at all - last 6 months.

Not sure, but this may help: Christopher J. Earley, MB, BCh, PhD Re RLS and dopamine

I have Celiac disease and struggle with RLS that may or may not be a CD symptom. It often is and is improved by iron and B12

I actually go to Dr. Early and the very 1st thing he did was test my ferritin and iron binding capacity. My ferritin was 70 and he then sent me for an iron infusion. Helped some - I take less gabapentin than before.

glad it helped some. I won't use the drugs, and as someone with Celiac, we don't process drugs the same way, I'd need higher doses too quickly and then eventually no results. Not worth it for me.

I get up and walk, and use an amber bulb to do things around the house. This way the time I spend up walking, stretching and standing is combined with chores. I may go to bed for 10 hours to get 5 to 6 hours sleep, but I make up the time doing low level chores that don't require bright light.

What happened since then .. in regards symptoms & infusions , ferritin level ?

In their book on RLS Lee, Buchfuhrer, Henning et al surmise that there may also be a link between low iron levels and dopamine agonist augmentation. If taking a dopamine agonist it would seem particularly important therefore to ensure that iron levels are high.
