Has anyone tried magnesium citrate .?

I've not slept for a week well except for perhaps the odd hr .

My doctor put me on amitriptyline 10mg fir my RLS .at first it worked as helped me sleep .

But now I'm having a really bad time cannot sleep

A few nights ago I went on you tube and watched a consultant talking about RLS he advised magnesium citrate so I bought some first night I had a few hrs sleep then last night no sleep as my legs would not stop .

I feel I need to speak to my doctor again but to be honest I dont even think doctors understand unless they have this problem themselves.

You are correct,in that few of these medical geniuses have experienced RLS. Otherwise the Nobel prize would have been awarded 200 years ago !If you are still taking the Amitriptyline, then nothing will help. Ami is notorious in the rls community for aggravating it.

Mg citrate is one of the better mg's, I take it myself. 100 in the morning with potassium, and 100 in the evening. It helps with getting to sleep, and as a laxative for the opiates.

Hope that clarifies matters.

Oh dear. Another ignorant doctor. A simple google search shows all anti depressants cause or worsen RLS.

My neurologist put me on Amitriptyline years ago and it sent my RLS through the roof.

Don’t take it.

Have a look at the RLS UK website and it confirms anti depressants worsen RLS.

Has your GP ordered blood tests? Magnesium citrate helps a small minority so you may find it helps.

Raising serum ferritin above 100 resolves 60% of RLS so that’s the first thing to try.

Have a look at the links below. The more you research the better your RLS will be because, sadly, the majority of doctors and neurologists don’t know anything. That’s not an exaggeration!

Thanks for reply . I've had blood tests and were normal . However a year ago I had bloods done and came back low in folate so I take folic acid one a day . Also take b12 and now started magnesium citrate . Also the magnesium spray for aching legs .I keep laughing as I never slept at all last night so at 6am this morning I got in the car and drove to tesco as needed milk got home and realised I had odd shoes on 🤣 this is due to sleep deprivation I've never gone out like that before .

I've mainly drunk water today too and cut out the tea fingers crossed I may sleep a bit tonight .

Fell asleep this afternoon for hr and half (no problem sleeping in the day )

Also I have recently been made redundant after being on furlough for 8 months so my sleep pattern has changed in fact my whole life has changed not having a routine and cant even visit my family due to being in tier 3 .

Hoping we get back to normal.at some point .

When you say bloods came back normal- your GP will tell you they’re normal when in fact they’re way too low for someone with RLS.

Serum ferritin has to be above 100, preferably 250 but 15 is normal for others. Check the actual numbers. Again, GPs & neurologists aren’t aware of the link between low brain iron & RLS.

There are so many forms of magnesium - hard to tell what the best one is. I recently (1 month or so) started on Magtein and Magnesium Taurate. Magtein is a patented formulation with magnesium L-threonate (a metabolite of Vitamin C) and Mg-Taurate is Mg combined with Taurine. Both of these are touted as being better absorbed than other Mg supplements, and Magtein is called "Brain Magnesium".

I still have sleep and RLS issues but the Mg supplements have eliminated any muscle cramps, which have plagued me almost daily. That said - muscle cramps are NOT related to RLS directly - but they can occur at the same time. So, I'm not sure of the association of Mg with RLS or the avenues of effectiveness.

It worked briefly for me too, but I didn't stop taking it because the sleep I do get in the 5 years since I began is deeper and more restful than before I started it.

I take 1,000 mg of magnesium citrate...it helps with cramping and constipation from opiates.

what kind of doctor is that..amitriptyline is an anti depressant that balances the serotonin and dopamine...dont do it...when you kick the serotonin up it screws up your dopamine...the use to use dopamine for restless legs it works for a while...but serotonin will really increase the pain a hundred times...when i was in the nut house everybody wanted me off those evil opiods...the nurse even told me that I did not have RLS...I said okay I dialed my neurologist and said okay tell him that okay??

Then they told me they were going to talk to the administrator and have me kicked out...I said good let me talk to him to.

Moral of this Norco rant is they put me on an antideppresant that balanced the dopamine and serotonin like amitriptlyne and it increased the pain like a 100 percent...I talked to the shrink and told take that and shove it...there is only one anti depressant that increases dopamine and that is wellbutrin...they use it as and anti depressant and to get you off cigarettes...if you get it for depression its like 20 bucks for a month supply...if you get it to stop smoking its like a 100 bucks for a week supply.
