Oh goodness I meant PTSD

Bupropion IS an antidepressant. One of the brand names for it is Wellbutrin.

However it is ALSO used for smoking cessation, and I believe the brand name for this is Zyban.

I don't know about how easy it is to access either in Oz.

In the UK, wellbutrin can only be prescribed for depression by a consultant psychiatrist and only after at least two other antidepressants have failed to work.

I don't know if the formulation and strength of zyban is quite the same as wellbutrin and I don't know how easy it is to get a prescription for smoking cessation.

I guess you'd have to be a smoker.

I note lots of adverts for getting buprpion on line, but I don't know how legal that is.

Trazadone is also a RLS safe antidepressant.

I also don't know how effective either of these are for depression or anxiety.

Hi, I think you'll find that in Australia it's licensed for cessation of smoking only, not available for depression. I did try to get my GP to prescribe it for me to support my mood, but no luck. You can only stay on it for 3 months... I think and that if you're giving up smoking! Sorry!

OMG, I read that bupropion, marketed as Zyban for smoking cessation is the subject of a safety alert by the Australian government : Department of Health - Therapeutic Goods Administration.

"The profile of the drug is dominated by hypersensitivity reactions and neurological and psychiatric effects."

of 1215 reports

"The more commonly reported problems involved skin reactions (499 reports), psychiatric disturbances (427), the nervous system (406), and the gastrointestinal tract (258) "

There is another drug for smoking cessation called CHANTIX. A friend had a severe - and I mean severe - reaction to it when coupled with an antidepressant. She went home, quit all drugs cold turkey and hallucinated for 2 days!

I see chantix i.e. varenicline might help smoking cessation, but isn't a RLS safe antidepressant like bupropion, it can cause depression.
