I've noticed a lot of the post's are from across the pond, I'm 58 years old and have suffered from RLS my late teens in my case I have found that opiates have given me relief and yes I've tried everything and my pain pills and gabapentin 300 milgrms twice a day give me the relief so I'm not pacing the floor all night or wanting to amputate my legs my mom takes a pain pill with some kind of medication ropinalle or something like that it's a Parkinson's medication and that works for her but I've noticed that with out the pain medication the other medicine don't give her the relief she needs to get a nights sleep, does anyone else have a similar situation?

Hi there,

That's because this site is actually based here in the UK. Your mother is an a dopamine Agonist and that is the standard first treatment for RLS. However, if it's no longer working for her she needs to review her meds. She could be suffering Augmentation and might need to get off Ropinirole and switch to what you are on.

Spend a couple of hours reading the posts and you will find many people in exactly the same situation your mother.

Ropinirole is a first-line dopamine agonist for RLS. Clearly you both have familial RLS, and you have inherited it form your mother.

Is the 'pain pill' an opioid? If so, your doctor may be cognizant that it helps RLS, and he/she is attempting to keep the ropinirole dose to a minimum.

Read as much as you can, every day, so that you are armed with information. Familial RLS has a natural course of very slow worsening, so you will need more information for the future.

Ropinirole and similar drugs can make the condition worse, and you need enough knowledge to prevent that from happening.

I am across a different pond - the South Atlantic.
