Grrrrr. Rant on docs.

I've apparently run across a rule-follower of a doc. Moved to a new city, and saw her for dizziness, RLS and neck pain. After a bunch of referrals to other incompetent docs, and no relief for a single symptom, I asked her for valium that I could take when I woke up in the middle of the night in agony.

She gave me a script four months ago, and it took me four months to use up a one month script.

I emailed yesterday to request a refill. With my RLS driving me up the wall, I eagerly anticipated picking up the script and getting a night's rest.

Her response?

"A new visit would be required to write a prescription. With that being said, I may not be willing to prescribe that medication for that condition."

How RUDE. (Wish I could transfer this RLS hell to her for a night so she would know how it feels.)

I replied, "Well, what would you be willing to prescribe?"

Crickets.

Well, I took the initiative, changed doctors today and saw a quite lovely nurse practitioner. I explained that I've tried to stay off meds but I have to bite the bullet now. I'm simply wiped the eff out.

She prescribed Lyrica and I'm going to give it a shot.

(Oh, and when I went to fill the script, they would only accept a handwritten script. Picked that up from the doc and returned only to learn that my town is out of Lyrica until tomorrow. Then when I got home, my insurance asked for prior authorization....isn't a handwritten doctor's prescription authorization enough?)

I'm sure you will all get it, but I'm a danger on the road with this level of fatigue. To have to run around like a d*mn fool to get a prescription is just ridiculous.

Anyone have anything fabulous (or otherwise) to say about Lyrica?

Thanks for reading, guys. I wish you all a good night's sleep!

It's good to have a rant now and again especially when the world seems to be against you, not just docs!

I have to say, no matter how clumsily put, Lyrica may be more effective for your RLS than Valium.

You may have to give it a few weeks for it to be effective and get the dose right. It's a blessing a dopamine agonist wasn't advised.

Oh thank you, that is such blessed news. The neurologist suggested Mirapex but I never filled out. Gotta trust your gut!

Well done your gut! :-)

Hello. I read your post and wow am I so pleased I live in the UK. Free health care for all. Anyway, RLS; I take codeine to manage my RLS the result is I get a solid uninterrupted nights sleep. With codeine I get no RLS symptoms what so ever. If I stop the codeine for a few days in a row its guaranteed that I will get the RLS pain back. So if you can find a GP who doesn't think everyone in the world is addicted to codeine, (opiates), try codeine as an option.

With the opiate addiction raging in the states, I read recently that middle aged women are the biggest abusers. As I fall into that category, I can literally see the medical professional's eyelids drop and their pupils narrow when I even mention an opiate.

However, they don't seem to mind suggesting liver-damaging levels of tylenol for pain. With that being said, I've never tried codeine for RLS. Perhaps I can talk this latest doc into a small script. We're going on an extended travel in other countries starting March, and I'm already worried about how will I sleep and cope without access to medical care. D*mn this condition.

Could I ask what dose of buprenorphine you take Shumbah and at what time you take it?

I intend to ask my neurologist whether he will prescribe it in England.

Thanks in advance.

If buprenorphine the prescribed dose is 2 mg I break it half to 1 mg and then I break that in half ,so max per night is 1 mg I take it when I’m ready to sleep 24 hour half life .i brought 1 year supply from NYC . If you plan a holiday you could do the same bring back your drugs your letter the evidence will be in the fact that it’s working for you . That’s how I did it . Dr Glen brooks NYC

In Australia they won’t give me buprenorphine so they prescribe Temgesic it is buprenorphine but smaller dosage it comes in .02 subliqual and it does not last as long . 5 hour half life I take up to 8 of those starting early evening or , you can take it when ever your legs start as it works within minutes

I hope that helps all the best

I am putting it out there that they give it to you it is Gold . You need to do your research and take it in . YOU CANNOT BECOME ADDICTED they use it for addicts for that reason . After all we are all going to be on medication for the rest of our lives .

You cannot over does on buprenorphine

Please print off and high light important parts 🙂

Thank you for your reply, and I am SO happy you've found some relief. (I am involved in anti-suicide measures so that's why I'm really cheering for you!)

All I can say is that I've gone through the same gamete as you with prior authorizations!!! Getting a written rx is what a controlled drug requires along with the rest of the bull insurance and drug companies give us. Sorry to hear of your woes!
