Hypnosis?

I have had three consecutive nights of hell with my RLS & a friend suggested that maybe hypnosis might help me. Has anyone tried this? If so did it help.

If you type in Hypnosis in the Search box there are two threads on this subject from about a year ago which may be of interest to you.

I would try it in a heartbeat. I was counting on acupuncture to help with weaning off mirapex, but my legs were to jumpy to even lie still for it

Thank you Kaarina. I have followed your links & whilst hypnosis seems to work for behavioural problems it appears to be ineffective with RLS.

That's because the causes of rls are physical, not mental, like behaviour and habits.

I didnt try hypnosis, but i tried acupunture and everything else suggested on various posts with no help. I withdrew cold turkey from mirapex and gabapentin combination and the past 3 months have been living hell. Even off medication, the rls continued in both legs and arms. I hadn't had a full night's sleep in so long I truly thought I would die.

However, someone on here suggested reading John E. Sarno M.D. theories about the mind/body connection. I read "The Mindbody Prescription" and applied the principles to my rls. It only took about a week of practicing Dr. Sarno's suggestions, and, amazingly, I've slept 9 hours each night for 2 nights with no rls episodes. I hope it's not a fluke!

I know everyone reacts differently to "cures" and am not sure if it will help you, but for the price of a book, it's worth a try!

I'll keep the group posted on whether my recent success lasts!

Hi Shelleam, You said you applied he principles from the book and slept, but was there any RLS at all on those 2 nights before you went to bed or during the day? I am coming off of Mirapex and klonapin and it is hell. I am going out of the country in September and it will be an 11 hour flight. I am so afraid that I will have a big problem. I have waited for this trip for 15 years or more and I can't stand the thought of RLS ruining it.

Oh getting off the meds is hell! I went through the worst 2 months of my life getting off mirapex and gabapentin. By September your withdrawal should be well over so then you will be dealing with just the rls.

I had it during the day as well. I'd try to sneak in a nap but my legs and arms would not let me rest.just thinking about rls was enough to induce anxiety.

Once i started practicing the mindfulness suggestions from the book, the daytime issues stopped as well as the night.Start reading the book right away and practice telling yourself over and over you know this is caused by stress and past trauma. I too travel and have had severe attacks on planes. When you feel it coming keep telling yourself you know what it is and you won't allow it. I also do some deep breathing on planes to help.

I know this sounds a bit hokey, but it is working for me and I've tried everything else without success.

You can get through this. I'm sending you strength. Keep me posted on your progress.

Thank you so much. I will get the book and start working on it. Last night was the first night without rls, but I still have .05 mg of Mirapex to get off of and the kolonapin I still have 1mg to come off of. My granddaughter is graduating June 7th and it is in the evening and that is usually rls time for me. I pray I can get through her graduation without having to leave to do my kicking and rls dance.

Best of luck to you! I slept 3 nights in a row and took a 1 hr nap today without being bothered. I feel like a real person instead of a zombie lol.

Hypnosis is used for behavioral issues mostly, it is certainly not going to help a neurological disease that has a strong biological base. You cannot cure diseases with hypnosis.

Thank you Nightdancer - I agree with you. I should have realised that it couldn't help with diseases when my friend suggested it. But thank you for replying
