There are literally hundreds of books on CBT. I can't recommend any particular one, but I have always found the Dummy books to be aimed at my brain level. 😜
The Book Depository is a particularly good source. Free postage always rocks my boat!
Maybe someone else will come on with a better recommendation.
Cheers.
I can't see CBT helping your RLS though is may mask it to a certain extent.
CBT-i is a treatment for insomnia NOT RLS.
Many people who don't have RLS suffer insomnia, RLS is not the only cause and if somebody with RLS also has insomnia, it isn't necessarily due to the RLS.
CBT-i has been demonstrated to work for sleep problems, even for people with RLS so is worth looking at.
It's correct to say that CBT can't treat RLS symptoms, but that doesn't mean that it can't help with insomnia or with somethe other consequences of RLS e.g. anxiety, if necesssary.
The question didn't mention insomnia and neither did I.
Sorry about that, Hoochybaby posted very recently about insomnia and CBT was discussed in that post.
I hadn't thought that you may not have read it.
Apologies.
However, it's still evident that CBT CAN help with RLS, although doesn't mask the symptoms. CBT isn't known to have any effect on RLS symptoms at all.
Hi, I have a copy of Micki Rose's Recovery From Chronic Illness with mind-body medicine, but it no longer seems to be available. She has updated the Healing Plan on her website though, which covers much of the same ground purehealthclinic.co.uk/2021.... No guarantee that it will help the RLS of course, although it may and may help with general health. Some suggest food intolerances can play a part for some of us, especially gluten. My RLS has resolved but I changed a lot over a few years so don't know what resolved it. I am gluten free (all grains) which resolved some other problems so I know it was an issue for me and also take generous amounts of B12 plus small amounts of methylfolate, which also fixed other issues, so it could have been either, both or neither! Hope you can find some relief.
CBT won't address/stop your physical RLS symptoms. It could help you cope better with it by addressing unhelpful thought patterns.Anxiety Relief by John Crawford includes a chapter on CBT as well as lots of other ways to address anxiety. The issues he raises can also apply to depression although he has also specifically written about this.
It is definitely worth a try for insomnia. My severe RLS has been assuaged with iron supplements but try as I will - the insomnia remains. I sleep, but it's fractured, frequent awakenings, not restful. A friend just gifted me a sleep measuring device called Withings. It's a mat that sits under your mattress, and I don't know how it does it but in the morning I can turn on my phone click on the app and there's the whole night - Light Sleep, REM Sleep, Deep Sleep, awakenings, breathing difficulties, and heart rate. Anyway it's a great tool to assess something your trying to help with sleep, diet, supplements, exercise, etc. I'm sure some of the current activity trackers can do the same thing. Also here's a free CBT-I resource.
Hi, Dic_ love and love this eventual option (Withings) on tracking my sleep. I have been doing all nights, for 3.5 years now, however with the dataset coming from BilevelCPAP. This has been crucial for my progress on UARS, RLS, and PLMS, guiding me on what has to be adjusted on my medications (either positive or negative effects being analysed), sleep patterns (too much, too little REM, and so on, sleep efficiency, and so many more!!
_ It looks as would be able to go for a Polissonagraphy all nights!!
_ I would be very very interested on this Withings. Could you please provide me with some details on yours, model, where to buy, etc.
many thanks and good luck to all
