Ferritin level for RLSers, needs to be 70-100 or above. Magnesium i dont think there is a level. not for RLS.

Thanks. But it has been said that Magnesium helps with restless legs but could the levels get 2 high?

The only thing if you take too much Magnesium is alot of bowel movement. They is no level. Some people find Magnesium helps with RLS some dont, it never helped my RLS. If you are going to try it, it will tell you how much to take on the label.

Don't bother with mg oxide.

Use citrate or some other chelate form.

in reply to Madlegs1

I agree with madlegs1. Mag oxide, in spite of appearing to contain high doses of magnesium compared to other forms, is poorly absorbed when taken by mouth. In the US if a magnesium supplement bottle just says MAGNESIUM on the label it is usually magnesium oxide. A waste of time, effort, and money in my opinion.

My research shows that too much magnesium will cause diarrhea instead of accumulating too much in the body. You might like to read my post about magnesium oil and do some research to see if it's something you might like to try. Good luck.

My GP said not to take more than 400 mg magnesium.

My Ferritin was 49 - Docs all said OK don't do anything. Ha, from Johns Hopkins "A study has shown that in patients whose serum ferritin was < 75 µg/l, oral iron therapy on average improved RLS symptom after 3 months." Use Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate (crosses blood brain barrier more readily. Mg serum levels are a poor predictor of levels in tissues. Supplementation is usually innocuous. Best selling (and the one I use) on Amazon is Dr's Best High Absorbtion Mg.

I actually saw Dr. Early at Hopkins 2 weeks ago. I had my iron & ferritin levels tested & my ferritin was 70. He is sending me for an iron infusion. Said my levels are "relatively low." Everyone should watch his video about RLS and iron. Just look him up. Dr. Christopher Early.

Hi Dic, glad to hear you are still doing well on the bisglycinate alone. Your RLS was pretty wicked. Much more so than mine.

I will look up the Doc at Johns Hopkins re iron.

I have severe RLs and just had my ferritin checked.

It is 636 and shd be around 50! I don't know the measurement.

Apparently I have hemacromatosis-- too much iron, but no-one knows the effect it has on Rls.

Any comments?

in reply to picol

Wow,!! 636 ferritin level you definately do not need to take any more iron. Which why we ALWAYS tell people to NOT take iron of any sort til they know what their ferritin level is. I would suggest you email Dr. B about your question on this. rlshelp.org if anyone will know Dr. B should.

I would be a blithering idiot by now if I had not found the Johns Hopkins website. My RLS was severe - just laying down for 1 minute would start RLS and my legs would cramp - no possibility for sleep - at all! I was afraid of Iron overload (not really even knowing what that is) and was reluctant to take anything. I started with Black Strap Molasses and moved on to the Iron supplement.

Re: magnesium levels; it's been said here in the US that magnesium deficiency is VERY common but often missed because routine magnesium levels are measured from blood tests. Frequently the magnesium levels will come back in the normal range (via blood tests) but patients are still deficient. Levels CAN be measured in other ways (i.s. mouth swabs) but these tests are not rountine, have to be requested by the patient and sometimes are not done because insurance companies do not always reimburse. Also, some health care professionals do not think they are necessary. You could bypass all this and take magnesium baths with Epsom salts(magnesium sulfate) or magnesium chloride flakes> Both are fine. Google magnesium oil spray and find an easy inexpensive recipe for making your own. Magnesium is well absorbed through the skin; not so much through the gastrointestinal tract when taken as pills. I found a recipe from wellnessmama.com; now make my own and use my homemade spray daily. It seems to help my rls at night when I wake up and supplies magnesium for my heart problems. I believe it's safe used in this manner. Tell me what you think.

Does anyone know where to get nutrient levels tested? Cellular magnesium, calcium in particular?. Also I have been told I have high haemoglobin which may put me at stroke risk. Where can I get advice on Iron levels. Im unsure if I have akathisia or RLS but my agitation is worse in the evening. During June I went without sleep for 18 days and could not lie down for 8 weeks. I have a previous vit D deficency and was on pantoprazole for 20 years. Symptoms started with metoclopramide. Also have other symptoms such as speech loss and my jaw locked shut. I did have dystonia/dyskinesia especially round the throat but this has eased with taking calcium. I have been told my iron ferratin are borderline high?

Is there anyone in the UK I can be referred to?
