Do Antihistamines make rls worse ?

My mum takes cetrizine daily due to allergies and I'm wondering if they make the pain worse because today she took one in the morning and accidentally took another in the evening and her rls is kicking in.

Yes , the only safe antihistamines to take if you have RLS are Claritin / Clarytin and Allegra x

Zyrtec (spelling?) may also be ok.

I take Claritin without ill effects.

Madlegs just for your ever growing RLS knowledge Zyrtec is just brand name for Cetrizine . x

Thanks- I was getting that info from the Health Unlocked page , which is saying that cetrizine may be ok for rls . It is the same 2nd generation antihistamines as Claritin.

So - back to square 1 for Bejwo's Mum.😢

Further research shows that some arein fact able to take Zyrtec without problems . It is the Zyrtec D that must be avoided . Thanks Madlegs for furthering my RLS knowledge lol

All the best , be careful of your back doing the Can Can (wink )x

Yes they do in me much worse and it is every antihistamine I have tried .

Also be aware of Zyrtec D as it contains an added ingredient to make you drowsy but will send RLS nuts . (Pseudoephedrine ) x

I thought the "D" is for decongestant (pseudophed) is a non drowsy formula...

Yes. I do t take any oral antihistamines and instead use a prescription antihistamine nasal spray and anti-allergy eye drops as needed.

My rls has been pretty bad lately and my Doc has got me on Fexofenadine Hydrochloride180mg Antihistamines. Where do they come in the great table of help or hinder please?

Antihistamines block the dopamine, just like they block histamines that cause allergies. Therefore your body is signaled to produce EVEN MORE dopamine, therefore, legs are worse. (At least, this is my understanding from the way my doc explained it). :-)
