Good alternatives to smoking?

Hi everyone,

I recently gave up smoking for a week (doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s the longest I’ve gone) i’ve been wearing the patches and chewing the gum. But i’ve noticed im just so much more stressed when not smoking as there is a constant battle in my head .. “go on one wont hurt, you’re stressed” vs “work on your health, its not worth it” etc which leaves me really mentally exhausted. If anyone has any affirmations, something that motivated them, something that made the mental side of it all a little easier please let me know? Would be of great help.

Hi Rubyblue, Well done for your decision to quit👏 and of course for your 1️⃣ smoke free week.

Welcome to Quit Support.💙

It’s never easy to quit but it’s easier with a little support.💪

I think what you are experiencing is 'junkie thinking' ,sometimes we under estimate the addiction side of smoking. Here's a link which may help.

Can I suggest that you have a look at the pinned posts which you will find either to the right or at the bottom of your screen. There you will find lots of useful tips an information to support you in your quit.

Make a plan and try to keep busy, while your mind is on other things it won't be on cigarettes, take it one day at a time and be kind to yourself and of course keep coming on here.

If you could let have your actual quit date, we can add you to our database and assign you with a progress batch.

Bye for now.

Hi Ruby and welcome to Quit Support🚭✅

Congrats on getting through your first week, not easy but you’re doing it anyway, well done👍

I used lots of slow deep breathing to get through those tough moments, I guess mimicking those deep inhales🤔 but it definitely helped me.

Swimming is my other passion and really helps too🏊🏼‍♀️

Some of our members have turned to running but any exercise will help speed up the healing process.

Candy crush if you’re looking for something less energetic😉

Look in the mirror and tell yourself you CAN do this. Stay positive and I promise it will be worth it💕🌻xx

Hi Ruby, congratulations on getting through your first week. This is the addiction that is playing mind games with you.

What worked for me was working really hard on changing the way I viewed smoking and my quit. Initially I felt like I was being punished for making such a positive decision about my future health. This was after 40 years of smoking 30 a day.

I played mental game, each time I got a craving I would say to myself, is that the best you can throw at me...not good enough to make me light up..sounds lame, but it actually made he stronger and I absolute viewed cigarettes as the disgusting cancer sticks that they are.

This put me in control, it was tough, but certainly helped me...the other thing is to keep this site nice and close, Read other peoples journeys as you will get inspiration and see that you are not alone in how your feeling.

There is no right or wrong way, it’s about finding out what will work best for you. In regard to the anxiety, trust me, this is only temporary and just part of the journey. Ride the roller coaster of emotions and try take the positives from it..you are doing brilliantly so ha g in there. ❤️🍀🍀🍀👍👍

heard recently that if you drop of little salt on the front of your tongue it's a cig turn off. am yet to trial it. you would need to drink a good deal of water with this effort. i guess it's like aversive therapy. like 'a clockwork orange'. i try to turn the cravings into anger at the cigs and tobacco industry themselves. at the hoodwinking that has happened to us all. at the cost to smoke. at the cost to try to stop. at all the wasted time over the years.

Hello Ruby. I am very glad you brought that up because that is my biggest problem! I know exactly what you mean about the thoughts exhausting here! It is exactly the reason why I have not totally quit smoking yet. I need some how to quiet that nicotine voice in the back of my head! It's a never-ending battle in my head. Yes I should smoke, no I shouldn't have smoked. This is how my battle goes in my head. I wish it would just shut up and go away! Like you said it is a battle and very exhausting!

Nice job on your week, Ruby...! It’s pretty rough as your brain is working hard to get you to give it what it craves. For me, I had to find ways to fill up my mental space with activities that promoted some challenge without causing frustration. Lol! That was excruciating because initially everything frustrated me. My success this time was exercise. Walking specifically. I don’t need equipment and I can do it rain or shine! (I have a rain suit). I drank more water, I removed people or situations that promoted negativity, I say no to people more, I try more things and accept it if I don’t like them, and am doing crosswords, sudoku, and cryptoquips. Keep busy and don’t allow yourself too much time alone to think initially. Go out with friends or family whom are apart of your support plan for coffee or watch movies. Be careful with the munchies. I set up a meal plan and stuck with it. I used water, tea, and coffee without milk or sugar. I kept my weight gain much lower.

I found ASMR videos on YouTube to help with relaxation to sleep. I also use YT for rain and thunder, white noise, classical music, celtic music, meditation videos, amongst other things.

Good luck, dear! 👍🏽
