Why can't I sleep?

Last night I went to bed at 3:30 and tossed and turned until I got up at 7:00. I quit smoking 3 weeks ago. I have been using the nicotine patch. I am still on the first step, but bought 2 weeks worth of the second step today.

Perhaps it's time to step down to the second step? I've read that quitting smoking can induce insomnia as well as nicotine itself (double edged sword eh?). I'd say give it a shot to see if it helps. I know I read within the vaping community that many lower their nicotine strength towards the end of their day to avoid issues sleeping.

Hi Mimi

Wow 3 weeks,,,,,,, well done, nearly time for your month quit badge :) thats a brilliant achievement :)

I think not sleeping is really common during the early stages of a quit, and it doesnt seem to matter what method people are using to quit, looking back over the posts, vapers, cold turkey, patches.....many people struggle. I am vaping and due to the medication I was on for my migraines i was sleeping, but the doc changed it yesterday and i could not sleep last night at all :(

Hopefully it passes soon. But stay strong as you are doing an amazing job x

Hi Mimi

You must be exhausted! Have you had to go to work today? Not sure why you can't sleep, probably your body adjusting to such a huge positive change you've made. I've got some sleep aid cds I can burn copies of and post to you. They are brilliant so just drop me a line and let me know. I sometimes take sleepy herbal tea when I struggle to sleep and read in bed drinking it, I find reading helps me fall asleep. Worse case I take herbal sleeping pills if I am really at my wits end.

Hi Bee what herbal sleeping tablets do you use? x

Kalms or Nytol are good but I use Sainsbury's sleep aid as they are cheaper

They're all herbal so no nasty addiction to prescription sleeping pills. They work for me when I really can't sleep and I can't take it anymore.

These are my favourite, you can buy them in any large supermarket like Sainsburys or Tesco or at a health food shop like Planet Organic

Thank you for your replies. I slept almost 3 hours last night. I start step 2 tomorrow. I may take some no prescription sleep aids for the next few days and try to nap later. I have odd work hours that don't help my sleep habits. I'm sure the insomnia will not last forever.

Hi Mimi - don't forget the wonderful camomile tea! It really is a great natural relaxant and helps you have a wonderful sleep. I had exactly the same problem as you re sleep at roughly the same time and it certainly helped me!
