We are using artificial tears for dad. It seems as though the eyes water excessively because they are irritated due to lack of blinking. The artificial tears soothe the eyes and thus they will water less. Sunglasses also help because psp patients eyes are more sensitive to light for some reason. I hope this helps...good luck!

We are also using artificial tears in my dads eyes which don't seem to help but we continue to use them several times a day. We have taken my dad to many eye doctors and even had botox shots in his eyes not realizing it was the disease. As of now there does not seem to be an answer for the eye issue that I am aware of and after 3 years of this my dad just carries a soft cloth around and wipes his eyes when needed.

my dad had a similar problem and the doctor had suggested, Eye gel. it did help a little. you could ask your psp doctor about a recommended brand there.

A number of people with PSP have this problem some people find applying a little vaseline under the eyes, before bed (not the day time as this can impair vision) helps protect the skin from soreness. Also a using a soft hankerchief rather than tissues as this can be less abrasive and dabbing the eyes rather than wiping. For most people this problem passes, however if it is troublesome or persistent, do consult the GP as it may be that the tear duct is blocked and that is why the fluid is not draining and the GPcan refer you to get this sorted by an eye specialist. Also remember eye drops are still necessary, as cornea of the eye still at risk of ulceration as watery discharge from eyes only bathes the outer edge of the eye and with decreased blink rate the cornea is still likely to become dry.

Dear Jill, my mother in law was diagnosed in Dec 2010 with PSP . Her worst problem is this watering of the eyes all the time and blurred vision , you say above that "for most people this problem passes ", I dont quite understand what you mean here ,could you if possible clarify . At night she uses a vaseline type medication - Lacralube - I think (not spelled properly !) . I wonder if even though her eyes water she should use eye drops as well as I understand what you are saying about the decreasing blink rate and drynessto the cornea area. Thank you in advance .

Also should have said that there are possible medications for this if the problem is persistent and a bother to person.

Hard to believe but dry eyes cause eyes to water. It's the reverse of what we would think. In PSP the eyes don't react as normal eyes and blinking doesn't take place as often as "normal" eyes. Try eye drops is the only thing I can say.

It took us 2 years to solve the problem for mum, it may not work for you but has worked for us for 3 years. three times a day we put swabs on mums eyes, not cotton wool or anything else as that can cause irritation, bathed in warm water swabs, 5 mins ( we soak cut up swabs in warm water), we then gently wipe the eyes and if they are feeling hot and irriatated use swabs with cold water. It also gives them a time to relax in the day and lay down. all takes about 15 mins

After that I put a drop of hypromellose in each eye. After a month my mum eyes began to improve. It took many trips to eye specialists and others to get to this stage. Hope it works for you. The most important thing is that when you wipe the eyes you do remove some of the gunk, very hard to see.
