Hi all.

Mum has worsened recently after a viral infection - she now has little/ no bladder control & some pain. She’s on permanent low dose antibiotics & upped to 2 a day. My question is when to think about a catheter..? Or is that really a last resort? Getting on & off the commode is exhausting her and she can barely stand anymore so changing her is also increasingly difficult 😟 although now at 4 carers visits a day to try to make sure she’s not sitting in wet for too long. Thanks! Nicky.

I have no direct experience but heard that there are "wicking" solutions for women that can play the role of an external catheter i.e. take away the fluids (particularly at night) so the patient stays dry and comfortable. I don't know if that's been discussed with the continence nurses? I found they just wanted to sort out pads 🤷

Thanks.

We couldn’t even get the incontinence nurse to visit - ‘not a priority.. ‘ I’ll definitely try again

I’m sorry to hear this. My suggestion is that you push the GP on this to get you the support you need.

I cannot comment as my dad has been catheterised for nearly 18 months now yet his condition has warranted this for some time - the carers manage everything and DNs change the catheter as required especially post inflection. My only thought is that being wet for periods of time can certainly create a risk of infection and if immobile make the challenge with pressure sores greater.
