Hanging on

Remarkably mum is still hanging on through sheer grit we think. She's very weak and frail, had another couple of falls. Been in hospital with pneumonia before xmas and had pneumonia again 2 weeks ago.

The care home are great but the frustration is the loss of speech for over 2 years now, no way to communicate except the odd thumbs up which is rare these days.

Jusy come home on my day off to meet the mental health nurse and tentatively discuss CHC.

I wanted to make people aware that the care homes get less money from CHC which explains the reluctance to request assessments and the playing down of symptoms.

I've stopped paying them so let's see if this creates some co operation.

Btw they are great in so many ways.

Mum today choked with her super thickened drink and I pointed out she pools it in her mouth. Another referral to SALT.

I've avoided the chc funding as really mum seems so close to the end but she was 2 years ago when she narrowly missed out. I didn't imagine she'd still be here in an even worse state. I've been told by my family that she hasn't worked since she was 15 to have the everything gone, so I've a renewed sense of purpose and a massive headache already.

Just an update

Tough times ❤️I’ve also been told that the home get less money if the residents care is funded by CHC

Maybe the care homes do get less, but why should that be your issue?

They make a lot of money, don’t worry about that. This is about your Mum not someone’s profit line!

Thank you for posting, looking through previous posts, your Mum is definitely remarkable and she's lucky to have you 💜I saw your previous experience of the CHC process - I'm currently trying to get the checklist started for my husband, I worry that we could miss the window - it's right now his needs are in so many areas - so unpredictable and connected. While I want to care for him at home, it's really tiring to supervise 24/7, measuring stats, and determining several times a day whether it's "just a bad PSP day" or his health is under attack from a different angle - and if so, where to turn.

I hope you will get the right result from the CHC process this time around 🤞

Thankyou she is certainly remarkable. Definitely push for a chc assessment, it seems to me a postcode lottery as much as anything else. My mum had 4 carers at home before being in hospital but nobody could reason with her to keep her safe hence the second broken hip and care home.

I would recommend the Facebook chc gruos they're full of valuable information. I think you'll know when the time comes for a care home. If you're exhausted and wearing yourself out you'll be making yourself ill. The first checklist was as a result of of a me having a pure meltdown with the doctors tbh and putting it in writing. It was after me chasing it for maybe 12 months. So frustrating. Sending lots of love xx
