Kidney stones from drinking too little water… and other well-meant mistakes.

I have surgery next week to remove a big kidney stone. We had to delay because I had a serious UTI that needed to be taken care of first. They placed a stent (a coil that holds the stone and that expands to make space) around the stone to allow liquid to go around the stone until they can laser and remove it. It dropped the pain to zero. I’ve been drinking less liquids, about 6 cups a day, for months to relieve overnight peeing and I didn’t know that could lead to crystals which grow into stones. Anyone else experience this?

Are there other things like this that have happened to you because you tried to control a symptom? Your experience could save others from an ambulance ride because of the pain and a night in the hospital.

thanks!

Hello Kayelless,

I have suffered a kidney stone, too, and from not drinking sufficient water. (I am glad to know that you will not be in pain until it is removed!) That was just being thoughtless, and too busy though, in my case, not because of trying to mitigate other symptoms. My husband had PSP and we would make certain that he drank a good amount of water and other liquids during the day, up to about 6 p.m. and then would stop. That seemed to be helpful in alleviating the need to get up to pee during the night. Hope this is helpful. Purrlie
