So Moms right hand has been an ongoing issue to deal
with; its curling most of the time .... she is not able to grasp anything anymore.
Lately, she has been complaining that it burns... the last couple of nights, she is saying/whispering “my hand is on fire”.
I have offered different things to try and help, but nothing seems to work. It’s Sunday here, so I can only leave a message for her Doc — and I will call in the morning .
Has anyone ever experienced this?

Hi Colin has a dodgy hand we both are closed up now, he used to complain about all sorts of feelings in them. Have you tried putting a face clothe in the freezer and rolling it up, to fit into her hand? Might help for a while.
That’s a good idea — I’m going to do that now. I have her hand resting on an ice pack — she says it’s helping, but I like the idea of her holding it. Thanks Helen!
I just put it in the freezer!! I’ll let you know!! Happy Sunday!! Xx
PSP curled mom's hands but she did not complain about pain. Once after a fall l knew her wrist & possibly a finger to two were broken but she argued she was fine. Dr put a cast on her arm and she still said she was fine. Tiny cool packs might help. Keep up the good work by searching for answers. Sending hugs... Granni B
The fires of hell - nerve pain, or as I call them - The Travelling Willburys. I have them everyday... all over, sometimes to a greater or lesser extent, they come and go. You might consider gavapentin, it may alleviate some of it.
There was a point in what I would now call "mid stage" illness when my husband would wake to find one of his hands had curled tightly and painfully during the night. It was hard to "uncurl" it. Physical therapist suggested he see an OT to have a plastic mold made of his hand, open, so that he could strap it on at night and not wake to a curled hand. Then, after about two years, the problem went away. Overall, in the last eight years, Sinemet has been the only medication that helps at all with stiffness and even then it has helped his legs, principally, and not his hands or neck. It's important to keep trying things because these conditions have so many idiosyncratic manifestations and you never know which one might work!
Both my sister's hands are curled up tight..Physio therapy had a 'mold' made which she would wear at night to open up her one hand..she never complained about a 'burning sensation'..With the 'lock down' the physiotherapist has not been allowed in to her LTC facility and the staff don't have time to put the support on and off! Hopefully in this early stage for your mom and with things opening up a little your doctor could order a physio to see if a 'molded support' could be made...and also my sister did have a face cloth rolled up and placed in her hand which did help her initially...good luck !! Liz
It works!! The rolled frozen cloths are working great —- for now anyway! Gosh I love all of you and the solid direction that you offer!! Hugs for everyone!!!
My husband’s hands are freezing cold most of the time but he says they feel like they are on fire. Curling up isn’t an issue for him but he has a hard time with his grip. His symptoms are caused from his neck injury and have probably intensified with his disease.
We tried gabapentin but the side effects, dizziness and loss of balance, was worse than the burning hands. I haven’t found anything helpful yet, except coming upon this post and discovering once again that we are not alone.
My hand sometimes feels likes it is under attack by a cloud of stinging gnats. Fortunately it doesn't last too long, so far. I don't know if there is an effective treatment.
I wrote I’m repeating myself because I had told in reply’s to others to go see a rheumatologist. Truthfully, I’m late to even know what they do but now I have one as well and can’t live without her.
My husbands hands are both curled up tight. I use the rolled wash cloths. It is difficult to cut his fingernails but this has been going on for some time. It was only one hand at first so we really tried therapy to keep the other hand moving but eventually that battle was lost too.
Thank you Maria Elena - I’m sorry that you are experiencing these issues as well. I now have a rotation of ice packs that she s uses to keep her hand cool; it seems to be working for now. Feel pretty helpless with some of this. Prayers for you as well. Hugs - Kim
