Hands & Heat

We’ve found something that has really helped Mom at night when she goes to sleep ... Her right hand hurts a lot, and we have been using a neck warmer — it has a light lavender scent when heated in the microwave, but wow has it really become a wonderful aid in keeping her hand warm as she falls asleep.

She is so used to me taking her picture ... she just smiles. I told her that I wanted to take a picture of her using her neck warmer, so that we can thank a family member for this wonderful Christmas gift ... that has become a nightly favorite!

- Hope all of you are doing well in lockdown ... we are trying to stay busy.

Your mom is so beautiful. Do you apply makeup on her before snapping such lovely photos? Any idea where I can find a heated/scented neck warmer like that? I used to be able to find scented silk eye masks at Whole Foods but they stopped selling them a long time ago.

I will ask my Aunt where she purchased this —- As for make up, ha! No, but that particular photo does have a light filter on it —- that photo, I literally snapped as we did our goodnight routine last night ... she just looked so beautiful laying there.

That word routine ... I’m not sure about any of your experiences, but we have fallen into a “routine” ... its as if she expects everything to go the exact same way every night, I can see it in her eyes ... expecting the next step. I get her in bed, she looks at me and positions her hands, waiting for me to rub this awesome hand lotion called Orange Blossom Honey by The Naked Bee. I apply, she looks at me, brings her hands to her face and every single time, she smiles and looks at me and says in a whisper (as if it is the first time) ... “that smells so good” ... and then she hugs the fuzzy warmer, pulls against her face ... I love our evening rituals. (Sorry, 17 chapter response, ha ... that’s me)

You can easily make your own if you have dry rice in your pantry. I fill socks with rice and knot the top shut and microwave about 3 minutes. I’ll post a new post with a picture of one of mine. You can also look up how to make these online - and with your sewing skills I’m sure you can make one wider from scraps of material.

Ettavb, you’re right! I could make one. I would need to add essential oil though for the lavender or maybe vanilla scent. I have brown rice in the cupboard. Do you use white rice? I think it would be a luxury to buy the fury one that is already done 😂

I updated the post a bit since you last read. I don’t like the smell of lavender (and is actually why I sought out to make my own originally because I could not find commercial ones that hadn’t been scented with lavender).

The “unscented” ones smell a bit like baking bread when they first come out of the microwave (and a smell I much prefer!).

I’ve used all kinds of rice: brown, white, Abarrio, etc. - they all work.

SewBears is right, Kim, your mum really does have the most beautiful complexion. I don't look as good as that even after spending half an hour putting on my war paint! She looks so cosy, keep up the good work.

Ah... heat. As close to a panacea we'll find for pain - it makes a difference. Love that smile.

We used one for my husband for his neck when it would get so stiff that he couldn't move his head. It seemed to help quite a bit. I use it now to keep my feet warm at night so I don't need to use an electric blanket or heated mattress pad. It works so much better!
