Sadly it feels that my Mother who suffers from PSP will need a team of helpers pretty soon and wanted to know if anyone could recommend a really good care home in South London?

Hi

The only way to be comfortable with your choice is to visit local homes, make an appointment and also go in unannounced. You need a home that caters for Neurological disease (apologies if teaching you to 'suck eggs').

When Geoff went into full time nursing care, I found it took a while for the staff to get used to his PSP as it is still very rare and so most staff don't have the experience to deal with it.

He's been there since June and is settled now and the care staff are great with him, some still don't understand that when he grips onto something it is the disease and so telling him to let go doesn't work, some still don't recognise when he's in Dystionia, but I go in almost every day with a positive a cheery attitude, I remain involved with all aspects of his personal care and I see this as a training tool and feel I have the respect of the staff because of this.

These are tips if you have the time to echo this technique.

There is good and bad in all homes and if concerned you can always contact the quality care commission as they will go in to do regular checks.

Good Luck in your choice. It is not easy

I agree with you, go into homes locally but also visit often. I went every day to visit P and I felt I was `teaching` the staff, nurse and GP about PSP because no-one seemed to have had personal experience of it. I supplied all the information that PSPA provided for professionals but still I was telling the staff what was down to PSP (coughing and choking on food etc).

Learn as much as you can about PSP because carers/staff often have lots of other conditions to deal with and you need to know what to expect so you can make them aware.

Good luck. x
