What happened to sunny Devon? It is more like freezing Siberia here, we poor southern souls are not equipped to deal with this .My cat is once again looking singularly perturbed as the snow continues to fall and turns my garden into a scene more akin to the arctic than Subtropical Devon ( that might be a small exaggeration ,but you know what I mean ) . Spring is not springing it has gone positively dormant . I think I shall possibly go into hibernation until it’s all over .
Yesterday I picked daffodils on my allotment today I doubt if I would even find them .For those of you who vaguely remember I recently had a hip replacement operation , do not worry I shall not be venturing out , I now look nervously at ground conditions ,something I have never done before I hasten to add ,In case yes , those dreaded words “I take a little tumble “ Never thought I would be reduced to this . I am reading a book at the moment about shinanakins in an old people’s home . The main character has founded a “Not- dead yet “ club . I have decided to start one of my own where I shall consider all new options as to how to misbehave as I grow old (older) .Any suggestions would be most welcome . I think firstly I shall give up queuing. I will push rudely to the front and pretend I am deaf .Then I think driving at 50mph in the middle lane of the motorway would be a good one to really annoy all the boy racers .Oh the possibilities are endless .
Yesterday there was a concert of Irish folk music in our local church .St Patrick’s day and all that . It was a toss up between going to that and watching the rugby as they were both on at the same time (genius planning much like Harry’s wedding and FA cup final day , who thought that one up ? )Anyway I suddenly remembered I could record the rugby and so get the best of both worlds . The music was lovely and all was going well until the soprano soloist sang Danny Boy unaccompanied, yes you’ve guessed one of Veronica’s favourites . It took me right back to a small pub in Ireland where we had gone to listen to a folk band and the lead singer sang Danny Boy for Veronica . Well ,the tears just came and I sat there remembering wonderful times with the tears trickling down my cheeks . Can tears be both happy and sad at the same time ? Whatever ,all I know there’s no stopping them .

Global warming Georgepa but the warming hasn’t found us on the globe yet although we did have Spring here, it was on Friday 16th. Hibernation sounds good.
Yes, I think you can have happy and sad tears at the same time and they are difficult to turn off.
Cuddle up to the cat and keep warm Georgepa. My mum used to make me wear a Liberty bodice in the winter with cloth covered buttons. I hated it but it kept me warm. Bring back the Liberty bodice 😱 .
Still got mine ,cloth buttons and all - don’t know why but it seems a tad small was I ever that small ,guess I must have been . Why was it called a liberty bodice there wasn’t much “ liberty “ about it positively constricting if I remember rightly .
Apparently before they were made for children, they were made for American women to wear instead of uncomfortable boned corsets but I agree with you, they were very constricting.
I thought the middle lane was especially for me to do 50 m.p.h ! Perhaps that explains why everyone waves at me ? Only joking !
Danny Boy is our family tune. Our daughter plays it on her violin [ she's good ! ] at all family gatherings and at Chris funeral. Guaranteed to bring tears. Its so plaintive and beautiful.
Some tears most days, George. Hibernation feels the right thing when its cold.
I understand Spring is due back next week. I am gearing myself up to doing a little clearing up in the garden.
I also remember my liberty bodice, the latest name for them are (thermal under wear). And I've just go them out again. They used to have long johns ,( renamed thermals).. thats what you need to keep the cold off you new hip..
Do you think my mother’s decision to enclose me in a liberty bodice influenced my decision to wear a gold earring and carry a shoulder bag . My northern Grandchildren are always slightly worried about my transgender proclivities 😁
If your the slow coach in the middle lane doing 50 mph , I might be the one useing the kick down , and over taking in the fast lane....whoopee. ...Brenda xx
George you brought and smile and tears, snowed here yesterday it is very cold today, keeps trying to snow this afternoon, I am going to hibernate, got my hot water bottle out last night, make sure George you look after yourself, George light the fire, cuddle the cat and stay warm. We have had a bad weekend George has been so agitated. Sending you George a big hug, stay warm. Yvonne xxxxx
Haven’t really started yet ,the ground is too wet but broad beans I planted in November are looking healthy . There are gnomes living in the garden by the way . Going Gnome and Gnome Sweet gnome share a patch whilst Gnome Alone - well speaks for itself.....
My mantra these days is 'Grow old disgracefully!'. I am looking for new things to do and new challenges! You don't know what you can still do until you try!!
Weather here is still warm but cooler and more fickle than a few weeks ago. Still on shorts and shirt sleeves. Eat your heart out!!!
Love 'Danny Boy'! One thing about living home alone is you can cry and enjoy the memories, sing out loud and no one tells you to be quiet or you are out of tune! Sad but true.
I did wave to you on passing, during the heaviest part of the snow storm. My dear sweet brother in law assured me there was no snow past Exeter. That was the worst bit! Now in Salcombe, having had a good evening.
Yesterday i watched the "match" with my England shirt on, which I bought for wearing in South Africa. Heartbreaking, yet it is my memories now, they shouldn't be dismissed.
Hi Anne, used to go to Salcombe when the boys were small, also stayed in Hope Cove one year, love that part of the world. Hope you enjoyed the rugby even if it's very bitter sweet memories.
Glad you enjoyed St Patrick's Day George. Sounds like you had a better time than I did. Oh no, I forgot...Ireland won at Twickenham!! 😁. I enjoyed the match with my Granddaughter. I got carried away and forgot she was here and let a rude word slip out! So I promptly apologised. She burst out laughing and said she is glad I am her Nan! Seems I am the mad one 😂. The other one is the sensible one!
Danny Boy...I sang it for my Granddaughter on Friday night! Difficult memories for me too. A couple we were friends with lost their daughter who was only 31 and that was the song that was played as her coffin was carried into the church. Everyone was in tears. It is a sad song at the best of times?
I wondered if you were snowed in. We had snow overnight but not a lot! There is a little bit left on the grass but it should be gone by tomorrow.
If you think you are badly off I have just seen an article on the news about bungalows falling into the sea in Norfolk! So count your daffodils! What are they like by the way? 😕
Take care and can I join your falling apart at the seams group?
vis-a-vis the rugby I heard on good authority that the England coach told the team to hold back as the Irish had not won anything for such a long time and if they did not win on St Patrick’s day they would be insufferable . The English rugby players being the gentle sweet natured chaps that they are obeyed orders - hence the Irish victory .🙃
George..what utter rubbish! The English never "let" anyone win. Ireland it seems are now ranked behind New Zealand. Don't know how long it will last for but we are enjoying it!! 😁
Georgepa, It is really super to have you posting again, originally I missed your post of 3 months ago and have only just caught up.
My answer to your question about happy/sad tears is that it is perfectly possible t0 have sad tears caused by a sudden reminder which are also happy ones: I do it often!!!
Dear George, nothing wrong with a good cry, happy tears from one eye and sad from the other, Danny Boy is always a heart wrencher at the best of times but when attached to special memories it doesnt take much to get the tears flowing.
I've been laughing out loud at all of your responses to the the posts here, you certainly do have a very naughty side to you, I bet you made Veronica smile with your wit.
Meanwhile keep warm and cosy and let this Siberian weather freeze itself out, roll on the real Spring bored with the cold now.
Well you certainly have set off one of the funniest set of responses that I have seen on this site which have given me a really good laugh and done me the world of good especially as I too am snowed in in sunny Somerset. Nigel was discharged home from hospital Saturday late afternoon and our carer has not been able to get to us since then because of the snow.
I would love to know the name of the book you are reading and the 'not dead yet club'. Have you seen the DVD ' Mrs Caldicott's Cabbage War' based on the same lines. Always makes me laugh.
Thank you.
Tears can be sad and happy. It is just a way of releasing emotions. Good that they come.
I wrote a poem on Music and memories but thought you might like the following two poems I wrote:
And PS. do not go outside just appreciate the snow we all used to love so much as children from the comfort of your room.

Silent Tears
The tears rolled silently from my eyes.
There was no sob, no noisy cries,
no aching from deep inside my heart,
no deep pain from being torn apart.
The body was still from taking enough,
but the outer layer just wasn’t as tough:
so to release the feelings there were some leaks,
and the tears rolled silently down my cheeks.
The motorway
The motorway’s madness: it’s completely insane,
as people forget there’s an inside lane!
On a normal road they seem to know,
that on the inside lane, one’s supposed to go,
unless one has the desire to get past
the car in front that isn’t driving so fast.
But on the motorway people seem bereft,
of the basic knowledge that on drives on the left!
My husband, that I am now married to, and I went to the Birmingham Hippodrome several years ago and on the way out we were stopped by police because boy racers were using a road unwisely. Nigel wound down the window and the policeman looked in and said 'Oh you are OK. You can go that way. You are not a boy racer'. Nigel looked at him really affronted and replied ' Well I could be if I wanted to be one'. !!
The three tenors
;
The three tenors stopped singing -
the crowd rose with a roar
of clapping and shouting as they clambered for more.
