My husband has PSP. His nose runs profusely every time he eats. I think I was given advice before about a medicine that helps this, but I can't remember now. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate them. Thanks

Runny Nose

Hi There. I am sorry I don't know of a medicine for this but my husband had a similar problem but it was not a long-lasting situation and very seldom bothers him now. Hope it's the same for you.

My wife did the same thing (she passed to PSP last July). The doctors and I discussed this before and we believe it is because when she eats, some of it is getting in her airway and possibly in her lungs. I first thought it was allergies, as her eyes watered a lot too, but that was because of her eye issues. Once she had a PEG inserted and rarely took in food orally, the runny nose diminished. But I would still give her thickened water, which would still cause the nose to run.
Will be curious to see if others have experienced the same thing.

I have just noticed this symptom It is a little annoying but I guess i will have to live with it. eating is starting to be a bit of a problem but I can handle it at the moment, I find that I have think what I am doing , things that were automatic before are now not so.
Gustatory rhinitis is not uncommon in the world, but does seem to affect psp patients disproportionately. The treatments vary according to what the doctors imagine in the immediate trigger, and some of the medications have side effects that are especially troublesome for older folks or folks who already have incontinence issues. It must be very distressing. I hope you find something that helps. Peace, ec
